The old town of Schwerte, picturesquely situated on the Ruhr, impresses with its well-preserved half-timbered houses and narrow streets that invite you to stroll. A central point is the market square with the imposing St. Viktor Church. This Gothic hall church from the 14th and 15th centuries impresses with its leaning tower and the magnificent Antwerp carved altar from 1523. Right next to the church is the Old Town Hall from 1547, which now houses the Ruhr Valley Museum. Another highlight is the Wuckenhof, a historic building from the early 19th century that underlines the charming atmosphere of the old town. For cyclists, the old town of Schwerte not only offers cultural sights, but also an ideal connection to the Ruhr Valley Cycle Path, which invites you to explore further along the Ruhr.

The Gehrenbach reservoir in Schwerte is a flood retention basin that was created in 1977 to prevent flooding along the Gehrenbach. The lake has a maximum volume of around 101,200 cubic meters and, in addition to flood protection, also serves as a local recreation area. Visitors can relax, walk and enjoy nature here. There are also opportunities for fishing, with the lake being particularly popular for carp and pike. In recent years, the reservoir has been regularly maintained to ensure its safety and functionality. For example, in November 2023 it was necessary to temporarily drain the lake to repair a defective gate. This measure served to protect the dam and ensure the functionality of the facility. During this work, fish and amphibians were relocated to protect wildlife. The lake is located near the Schwerte Forest, making it ideal for cycling and hiking as it is easily accessible and surrounded by green countryside.
