The Dietesheim quarries in the local recreation area The former basalt quarries are a popular destination in Dietesheim, and are now an attractive local recreation area. After the end of basalt mining in 1982, an impressive lake landscape covering a total area of more than 61 hectares was created here, of which around 22.5 hectares are deep blue water. In addition to the largest lakes, the Vogelsberg Lake and the Oberwaldsee, the attractive landscape is complemented by a number of smaller lakes. High cliffs can be admired as bizarre rock formations that are unique in the Rhine-Main region. Around 120,000 trees, mostly oaks and alders, and almost 7,000 shrubs have been planted at the Vogelsberg Lake and the Oberwaldsee for recultivation. Rare plants and animals have found a new habitat here. Part of the lake landscape around the Oberwaldsee is now a nature reserve. Easily accessible paths lead visitors to beautiful viewpoints, the highlight of which is the so-called Canyon Bridge. Extensive riding trails have been laid out around the recreation area.
