It's just the way it is with the "Hundle"! On the south side of the church, on a pedestal at the height of the roof eaves, stands the original of the "Brettener Hundle", with the help of which, according to legend, the city was saved from capture and plunder, hardship and death of its citizens in a hopeless situation during a siege. However, the legend has nothing in common with the actual siege of the city by Duke Ulrich of Württemberg in 1504, to which the Peter- und Paul folk festival is traced back. In May 1898, the foundation stone was laid in the presence of Grand Duchess Luise of Baden, the Emperor's sister, and in June 1898, in the presence of Grand Duke Friedrich of Baden, it was inaugurated and "graciously" honored by the Emperor. The monument, which was originally 7.5 meters high, is today the only original monument by the well-known sculptor Robert Bärwald.

From the outside, the Bretten Collegiate Church, with its whitewashed walls, makes a simple impression. Philipp Melanchthon, an important reformer and fellow campaigner of Martin Luther, is said to have been baptized in this church. Unfortunately, this cannot be proven. On the north side, directly in front of the church building, a statue in memory of Philipp Melanchthon has stood since 1861. Melanchthon was born here in Bretten as Philipp Schwartzerdt on February 16, 1497 - he later translated his family name into Greek.
