Hospital Church of the Holy Spirit, Eichstätt The hospital is a church-run care facility where pilgrims, the sick, and the elderly were admitted and cared for, with pastoral care being the primary focus. Daily life was organized, similar to that of a monastery. The Eichstätt hospital was built in the 13th century. Its favorable location, directly on the Altmühl River and on an important road outside the city, is typical for a hospital. The necessary new building was constructed between 1699 and 1703 and financed by Prince-Bishop Martin von Eyb. The most elaborate of the submitted designs was implemented. Several workers were killed in an accident during the construction. Engel's Building is a complex that combines the sacred building and the three-story rectory under a shared gable roof and is oriented to the south. The adjoining wings to the west of the church, forming a courtyard, served as apartments for the prebendaries. For the church, Engel designed a street-facing facade with monumental pilasters and a curved blind gable. Statues of Saints Willibald, Walburga, Martin, and Elizabeth are set in the niches. According to canon law, the church has only one turret. The church is a rectangular building, inscribed by built-in elements, forming a cruciform central space, with a choir featuring an additional bay. Tuscan pilasters, continued by transverse arches in the barrel vault, structure the austere space. The choir features ambulatory oratories so that even the sick could participate in the service. The altars and pulpit were likely designed by Engel. The Handschuher family of sculptors and the painters Oswald Onghers and Johann Melchior Schmidtner were involved in the execution. The ruined church of Spindeltal is not here, but about 3 kilometers further east.

Great day trip destination, although the castle isn't that big. But it takes an hour to walk around it with kids.
