Peiting is a market town in the Upper Bavarian district of Weilheim-Schongau. Surrounded by the moraine hills of Schlossberg, Kalvarienberg, Schnaidberg, and Bühlach, Peiting is a place that has managed to retain its Bavarian village character despite the population increase after the Second World War. Numerous agricultural businesses are located outside the town center in various hamlets. The town name is presumably derived from the noble family of the Peutingers, who likely settled in the area as early as the 6th century. Historically, the town is significant as the ancestral seat of the Welfs, who once resided here. The municipality of Peiting also includes the settlement of Herzogsägmühle, a diaconal institution. Peiting is located in the Oberland region east of Schongau near the eastern bank of the Lech, although the municipal area only actually borders the river southwest of the B 17 federal highway in an uninhabited area. The Peitnach (also referred to as Peitinger Mühlbach on some maps) flows through the town area in a northerly direction and empties into the Lech within the municipal territory near the Lechstaustufe 7 dam.
