Due to construction work for the IGA 2027, the Emscher Island in Gelsenkirchen's Nordsternpark has been closed since July 2025 and will remain closed until early 2028, resulting in significant restrictions for cyclists and pedestrians. Cycle paths are affected, and detours are in place north of the Emscher River and south of the canal. The canal bridge at junction 61 is also closed.

The stream is usually very clean, and the water doesn't smell. There's a swimming area for dogs.

The walk there is worth it, but depending on the time of year the forest path can be very muddy.
