Fort Thüngen, named after the Austrian fortress commander Adam Sigmund Freiherr von Thüngen, was built in 1732. It was laid out around the “Redoute du Parc” built by Vauban around 1688. The fort was surrounded by a deep moat and could be reached from Fort Obergrünewald via a 169 m long underground gallery. In 1836, the fort was expanded by the Prussians and reinforced again in 1860. The demolition took place in the years 1870 and 1874. Only the three round gorge towers of the redoubt, the so-called Three Acorns, and the foundation walls of the fort, re-exposed in 1991, were preserved. The "Musée d'Art Moderne Grand-Duc Jean", designed by the Sino-American architect Ieoh Ming Pei, was built on the envelope of the fort. The redoubt houses the Musée Dräi Eechelen.
