The grave field of about three hectares extends east of the settlement on a natural hill. It was later covered by dunes. In addition to some prehistoric graves, there are mainly early medieval grave forms from the 8th to 10th centuries. From 1965 to 1969, ship-shaped stone settlements were examined, which until then were only known from Denmark and Sweden. In addition, wooden ship parts with iron rivets were used for burials.

The graves contained cremations. Slavic pottery of the Feldberger type and Scandinavian costume jewelry were found as grave goods. An Anglo-Irish buckle and Sassanid-Persian imports complete the spectrum of far-reaching contacts. Grave shapes and burial of the dead show that indigenous Slavs and Scandinavians were buried here.

This relatively newly built cycle path is an excellent alternative to the busy Demminer Landstrasse. You can also enjoy great views here.

The Peene Valley - on the way from a major nature conservation project to a nature park
From 1992 to 2009, one of the largest nature conservation projects in Germany was implemented in the Peene Valley. This major nature conservation project was sponsored by the “Peenetal Landscape” association, which includes the Demmin and Ostvorpommern districts, the cities of Demmin, Loitz, Jarmen, Gützkow and Anklam and the “Nature Conservation in the Peene Valley” association.

The approximately 20,000 hectare core zone of the large-scale nature conservation project stretched from the north-west bank of the Kummerower See to the confluence of the Peene east of Anklam and included the entire deeply marshland valley of the Peene as well as a large part of the slopes of the Peene valley.

The core zone of the project was surrounded by a so-called project zone, which was also around 20,000 hectares in size. This zone of marginal influences on the Peene Valley was included both in the maintenance and development planning of the project and in the management of measures in the core zone, but investments in the natural development were not made here.

The main task of the large-scale nature conservation project was to create the natural conditions for the area-wide designation of the approximately 20,000 hectare core zone as a nature reserve.

For this purpose, a total of around € 27.2 million in public funds were made available in the 17 years of the project, almost 73% of which came from federal funds and a good 19% from funds from the state M-V. Around 8% of the project funds were raised by the member municipalities of the “Peenetal-Landschaft” association, supplemented by around € 640,000 from donations from the Kurt Lange Foundation in Bielefeld.

From here you have a beautiful view over the water surface of the wet Menzliner polder. Before the waterlogging in 2000, a pumping station lowered the groundwater level in the Menzlin polder, so that the former wet meadows were converted into intensive grassland and provided the feed basis for 1,000 cows of the LPG Menzlin. A diverse flora and fauna has developed here since the watering. Knotweed, spawning herbs and sedges form breeding and resting places for a wide variety of bird species: ducks, geese, swans, terns, birds of prey and herons.

Great bike path from Görke to Anklam. From the vantage point you can wonderfully observe nature and the various birds. Unfortunately the bike path is too short.
