The hill is named Weinberg (vineyard). Although no vines grow here anymore today, the place name has remained. After a short climb through the forest, a fantastic view opens up onto the Klostersee lake, glittering in the sun with its peninsula. Count Palatine Aribo and his wife founded the complex in 994 on the site of an older fortification. In clear weather conditions, the view even extends to the chain of the Chiemgau Alps.

There is no timetable for the ferry across the Alz. You have to call it. Where the stairs lead down to the water, there is a long rope hanging on the bank. If you pull it hard, a ferryman will soon stomp down from the Roiter guesthouse to the landing stage. The boat is powered solely by the force of the Alz. It is attached to a wire rope stretched across the river and is pushed to the other bank solely by the current due to the inclination of the hull. The ferry remains at the landing stage during high and low water, as well as on days when the Roiter guesthouse is closed. A few kilometers downstream, there is a small bridge near the Baumburg monastery. You can find the opening hours of the Roiter guesthouse here: http://roiter.de/

Between Seebruck and Altenmarkt, the Obere Alz winds its way almost untouched through floodplain forests and the remains of moors, as well as past romantic wildflower meadows. The protected area serves as a breeding and resting place for many bird species. The beaver has also settled here again. Gnawed willows are a clear sign that the rodent, with its large incisors, is nearby.

The fact that you can swim excellently in the Alz is thanks to the Chiemsee located upstream. The sediments washed in by the Tiroler Ache are deposited, and the water that flows out is accordingly clear. In addition, the lake releases its summer warmth to the river, which is why you can still jump into the water here wonderfully even in the early autumn months. Nevertheless, you should always keep an eye on the current.

It's not a spring in the traditional sense, but rather a headwaters area (slope, see photo), where the water converges on the clayey subsoil to the edge of the forest and then rises to the surface. This is where one of Bavaria's longest wild rivers begins its journey to its mouth in Lake Chiemsee in Schafwaschener Bay. A beautiful hiking trail leads from the source to the mouth.
