The Lake Ranch Reservoir is nice and peaceful to run, walk, hike, or bike along. There is a picnic table on the north side of the pond that you could rest at. Since the water is in a small valley, you may want to bring bug spray in the spring/summer months.

Serving as a scenic backdrop to the town of Los Gatos, St. Joseph's Hill is a 1,250-foot hill that looks down Los Gatos Creek valley and down over nearby Lexington Reservoir. It is also the summit of the Manzanita trail, which is a classic ride best done on a gravel bike.

While many trails in the preserve have elevation changes, routes like the initial section of the John Nicholas Trail to Lake Ranch Reservoir offer gentler terrain. For very young children or strollers, consider trails with minimal elevation gain. The preserve's diverse terrain means some paths might be too rugged for strollers, so checking individual route details is recommended.
Families can enjoy a variety of landscapes, from exposed chaparral and open meadows to shaded creek areas. Higher elevations offer breathtaking panoramic views of Silicon Valley, Lexington Reservoir, and the Diablo Range. In spring, the preserve comes alive with wildflowers, including a 'riotous display of hot pink blossoms' from the chaparral pea in May. You might also spot stately blue oak trees in the meadows.
Yes, dogs are generally allowed on trails in El Sereno Open Space Preserve, but they must be kept on a leash. This makes it a great destination for families who want to bring their furry friends along for the adventure.

Spring is an ideal time to visit, especially from March to May, when wildflowers are in bloom and the weather is generally mild. Fall provides pleasant temperatures and clear views.
