Without a doubt, the Col de la Piedra de Saint Martin or Pierre Saint-Martin is one of the Top 10 in the whole of the Pyrenees. Without exceeding 2000 metres of altitude, it is a very long pass, with a lot of accumulated gradient (due to the innumerable French slopes, the gradient is 1,450 metres), with very hard slopes and several kilometres above 10%, with wonderful landscapes and panoramic views and with little traffic, except for the slopes crossed by the main road (D132 in France, the NA 137 in Spain). It is a pass with many slopes; in Europe there are few other passes that have as many slopes as this one (col de Turini, Passo delle Erbe, would be comparable in number of slopes approximately). I have only climbed it by 2 slopes: (i) my first time was from Lourdios Ichère, crossing the col de Labays and the col de Soudet. Simply spectacular; (ii) I have subsequently climbed the Spanish side on several occasions, which is unique, and which starts from Belagua and crosses the Belagua cross-country ski resort to reach the mountain pass. It is also very beautiful, with a landscape and views different from the north-east side. If I had to choose one of the two, I liked the north-west side better because it is more remote, harder and in my opinion more authentic. It is also a culturally special mountain pass because the Tribute of the 3 cows takes place on its summit every 13th of July, which is considered the oldest treaty in force in Europe. So... you know... you cannot miss the opportunity to come here and enjoy this wonderful jewel of the Pyrenees!!!!

Pleasant cabin and well located for getting to Pic d'Anie in the early morning. During my visit (10/2023) only the SAS entrance to the cabin was accessible. The other 2 rooms were locked. Presence of a water point just a few meters from the cabin (be careful of the noise generated if you spend the night there).

The peak of Arlas forms a beautiful, incisive tooth, which stands out particularly well in the surrounding panoramas. On this point, you are ideally placed to admire his profile. The peak rises to an altitude of 2,044 meters and is located between Navarre in Spain and the Pyrénées-Atlantiques in France.

This guide features 5 challenging hiking routes that are accessible from bus stations, primarily starting from La Pierre Saint-Martin. These trails offer deep immersion into the region's unique natural environment.
All the routes listed in this guide are classified as difficult. The Aztaparretako Erreserba Integrala is known for its mountainous terrain, which includes significant elevation changes and, in some areas, wild sections that may lack clear paths. Hikers should be well-prepared with good orientation skills and appropriate gear.
Given the challenging nature of the trails in this guide, which are all rated as difficult, they may not be suitable for young children or families seeking easy walks. The region's rugged topography and demanding routes are generally better suited for experienced hikers.
Aztaparretako Erreserba Integrala is a protected natural area. While some areas may permit dogs on a leash, it's crucial to check specific regulations for the integral reserve and the broader Larra-Aztaparreta Special Area of Conservation before planning your hike. Restrictions are often in place to protect wildlife and the delicate ecosystem.
Hikers can expect to traverse a diverse and stunning landscape. The region is renowned for its pristine beech-fir forests, extensive karst formations with large limestone rocks, and vast mountain pastures. You'll encounter impressive elevations and dramatic views, particularly towards peaks like Lapakiza.
Yes, all 5 routes featured in this guide are circular, allowing you to start and end your hike at the same point, typically near a bus stop in La Pierre Saint-Martin. Examples include the challenging Pic d'Arlas – Anie Peak loop and the Pierre Saint-Martin Pass loop.
The best time for hiking is generally from late spring to early autumn (May to October) when the weather is more stable and trails are clear of snow. During winter, conditions can be very challenging with snow and ice, requiring specialized equipment and experience. The beech-fir forests are particularly beautiful in autumn with their vibrant colors.
The well-preserved ecosystem of Aztaparretako Erreserba Integrala supports diverse wildlife. Keep an eye out for characteristic bird species such as the black woodpecker and the white-backed woodpecker, which are indicators of a healthy, wild forest. Other Pyrenean wildlife may also be present.
Aztaparretako Erreserba Integrala is a highly protected area. While general access for hiking is usually permitted, certain activities or specific zones might require permits. It is always advisable to check with local authorities or the Navarre government's environmental department for the most current regulations before your visit.
The area is highly rated by the komoot community, with an average score of 4.56 stars from 390 ratings. Reviewers often praise the pristine, untouched nature of the beech-fir forests, the dramatic mountainous scenery, and the challenging yet rewarding trails that offer a true wilderness experience.
The region is quite remote, emphasizing its wild character. While the starting point of these routes, La Pierre Saint-Martin, may offer some basic services, extensive amenities like numerous cafes or diverse accommodation options directly adjacent to bus stops are limited. It's recommended to plan ahead for food, water, and lodging, especially if you're relying solely on public transport.
For hikes in this mountainous region, layered clothing is essential, even outside of winter, due to changing weather conditions. In winter, prepare for cold temperatures, snow, and ice; waterproof and insulated clothing, sturdy winter hiking boots, gaiters, and potentially snowshoes or crampons are highly recommended. Always check the weather forecast before heading out.
