In 1526, Charles V, then King of Spain and Holy Roman Emperor, visited Granada on his honeymoon. The architect Pedro Machuca was commissioned for the project, choosing a superb Mannerist style that prevailed in Renaissance Italy. The building's layout is another of its unique features: while the exterior has a quadrangular design, the interior courtyard, surrounded by an impressive two-story colonnade, is circular.
