The ruins have a very special character due to their construction – you can still really feel the connection between nature and medieval architecture.

During the Third Reich, the castle was initially used from 1941 by the Reichspost as a recreation home for postal employees, and after the Second World War, it was leased by the Deutsche Bundespost to Caritas, which operated a retirement home. In 1976, the post office sold the property to Munich entrepreneur Oskar Hacker, who had the castle restored between 1987 and 1993 to use it as a hotel with gastronomy. After the death of Oskar Hacker in 2016, the castle has been owned by the non-profit Oskar-Hacker-Stiftung, which is based in the castle. The foundation operates the Oskar-Hacker Kunstforum, which, among other things, established the permanent exhibition "Glaskunst im Schlosspark" by Borowski and a White Cube by photographer Mike Meyer in the park in 2024. The hotel and upscale gastronomy are leased. Source:https://de.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schloss_Hohenstein_(Oberfranken)

The small but beautiful square on the street invites you to take a break and, together with the fountain, forms a beautiful ensemble.

Once you emerge from the forest and climb the Haßberge Mountains, if the visibility is good, you'll see the 14-heiligen for the first time and, a little further to the left, Banz Monastery. From here, you walk until about 6 p.m. to reach the basilica.

Everything has already been written about the Grey Tower, but despite that, or perhaps because of that, it is a highlight for me!
