The first documented mention of the moated castle dates back to 1146. Between 1606 and 1622, it underwent extensive remodeling in the Renaissance style by Johann Friedrich von Schwalbach. In the 20th century, the complex was initially used as a hotel and later as a private clinic. Unfortunately, much to the dismay of the Mackenzell population, necessary renovation work on the privately owned property has been neglected for years.

Beautiful inside. I know it from my childhood. I grew up right next to it. It was a drug clinic for women for a long time, sometimes with their children. There was even a kindergarten there and countless sheep grazed in the moat... For a few years now, it has been falling into disrepair since it was last used. The fate of many castles. Sold to investors and they don't give a damn.

This clinic is a primary care hospital with 158 beds and has been part of the Helios Kliniken Group since January 2002. Since it was first mentioned in 1576, the clinic has developed into a modern acute care hospital. The landing pad for the rescue helicopter is located behind the large clinic building. However, it is very unfortunate that the previously highly regarded maternity clinic is now closed. More: www.helios-gesundheit.de/standorte-angebote/kliniken/huenfeld
