Teufelchen New
May 31, 2026, Arnoldi Monument, Gotha

In and in the nearby Krahnberg, there are several monuments dedicated to the Arnoldi family. The "old" Arnoldi monument was inaugurated on the second anniversary of Ernst Wilhelm Arnoldi's death on May 27, 1843, on the then Erfurt square. On the initiative of the "Association for the establishment of an honorary memorial for E. W. Arnoldi", the classicist monument was designed by court builder Gustav Eberhard (1805 - 1880). The "old" monument adorned the square, which had been renamed after Arnoldi since 1858, for 166 years. In September 1969, the monument had to make way for the widening of the road and the relocation of the tram from the old town. As the reconstruction of the monument was promised, the construction debris was dumped at Siebleben Castle Mönchshof. Since the "old" Arnoldi monument was considered lost or irreparable, the call for a new tribute arose immediately after 1990. On the 150th anniversary of Arnoldi's death, the "new" Arnoldi monument was unveiled on Arnoldiplatz at the end of Erfurter Straße. The seated bronze figure is a work of art by Prof. Göbel from Halle.

From the former Gotha main post office from 1890 at Eckholfplatz 1, a day care and assisted living facility was established starting in 2017. Somehow, the spirit of the post office still seems to be in this representative building.

The main market in Gotha is absolutely worth seeing. The most striking building on the main market is the Historic Town Hall, which forms the center of the Gotha main market and divides it into the upper and lower main market. The portal on the north side is among the most beautiful German Renaissance portals ever. Many decorative elements and inscriptions give the building its special character. A head sculpture with a movable lower jaw, which popular belief holds to be that of the knight Wilhelm von Grumbach, executed in 1567, is also worth mentioning.

At the former horse trough, the sandstone amphoras and vases were removed and replaced with bronze sculptures designed by Bernd Göbel, depicting the virtues of humanity on the one hand, and dice with numbers and words that are historically linked to Gotha and the main market square on the other.

The Augustinian Monastery in Gotha is the oldest settlement of Augustinian monks in Thuringia and the mother monastery of the famous monastery in Erfurt. It was first documented in the 13th century. Today, the monastery is a meeting center with a wide range of offerings, including concerts, events, and exhibitions. It also operates a café, and those who wish can even stay overnight, as Martin Luther did around 1515.
