During documenta, which takes place every five years, Friedrichsplatz is one of the central exhibition spaces. Here began the project "7000 Oaks," initiated by Joseph Beuys, which started at documenta 7 and was completed five years later with documenta 8. The first and last oak trees of this project stand in front of the Museum Friedericianum. Two other "exhibits" can also be found there: the vertical Earth Kilometer in the middle of the square and the sculpture "The Strangers" on the roof of the Red Palace.
