In 1265, the parish of Sint-Niklaas-Waver was recognized by the Bishop of Cambrai. During the religious wars (late 16th century), the church's archive was lost. From 1612-1614, a new tower was built, and in the 18th century, side aisles were added. In 1891-1894, the church was replaced by a Neo-Gothic structure designed by Léonard Blomme. It is an oriented three-nave cruciform basilica built of brick. The semi-enclosed west tower has five storeys and a tapered spire. The choir is closed off on seven sides.
