🦌 Running Find: The patron saint of Niel During my running session in Niel, I passed by this special work of art, a cool appearance with a story! The statue was placed in 2015 on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the Sint-Hubertuscomité. Sint-Hubertus is closely linked to the history of Niel and the well-known annual market. On the side, you can recognize the deer with the cross in its antlers. According to legend, Hubertus had this special vision during a hunt, which brought him to repentance. The saint is depicted here in robust, riveted metal plates. A striking piece of local culture that proves that while running, you can collect not only kilometers but also stories!

Everywhere along Flemish roads, you'll come across a chapel. Here, at the large Heideplaats, they also had some leftover bricks. The community of Niel has built a little house of devotion there.

The walls mainly seem to be an experimental space for local, unknown graffiti artists (for which they are of course intended). Apparently these walls are not yet well known among street art artists. The site is not even included on the reference site for legal graffiti walls: https://www.legal-walls.net/

Who is Gie Wyckmans, author of this text? Gie Wyckmans, a psychologist by training, is a resident of Niel and is very committed to nature conservation (in the local Natuurpunt department he is considered an insect and spider expert). In 2019 he became chairman of the local environmental council; a year later he resigned out of dissatisfaction with the municipal environmental policy. Here you can read his personal ode to the Rupel.
