October 1, 2025, Station Aalst

Aalst's station building was designed in 1852 by the Belgian architect Jean-Pierre Cluysenaar and officially inaugurated in 1856 by Crown Prince Leopold, later King Leopold II. The building combines the appearance of a medieval castle with a Gothic town hall and is constructed of Boom brick and bluestone, typical of the Tudor Gothic style. The side pavilions and platform canopy were added in 1890. Although the station was partially demolished in 1990, the historic facades and tower were preserved, making Aalst's station the only remaining Cluysenaar "town station." Today, it is a protected monument and a unique piece of railway heritage, while the surrounding area has been renovated thanks to Project ASO.

A silent witness to a distant past when this bridge was still functional and important. Nature is now taking over.

Beautiful landscape where many birds sometimes take a rest on the bank or adjacent meadow.

The old avenue was planted to provide the castle residents with the necessary shelter. Whether it was intense sunlight or rain, the treetops effectively shielded them from these adverse weather conditions. We still enjoy these benefits today.

The new Sint-Anna Bridge over the Dender River in Aalst is part of the renovation of the station area. It is a 380-ton movable bridge, making the Dender navigable for vessels up to 1,350 tons with a clearance of up to 7 meters. The new bridge also meets the increasing demands for increasing traffic and the safety of cyclists and pedestrians. An above-ground steel bascule bridge with counterweights in the above-ground arms was chosen. There is one arm per bank, which has the advantage that the structure is completely within the waterway, eliminating the need for space-consuming bridge cellars. A small opening angle is sufficient to allow vessels to pass and allows for rapid opening and closing of the bridge. Furthermore, above-ground bascule arms do not have the size limitations that underground versions in expensive bridge cellars do. This steel bascule bridge is a first for Belgium. The architectural style of the station building is a mix of a medieval castle and a Gothic town hall.
