This tower is a remnant of a church built in the 13th century. Over time, the church was modified several times. When the church was demolished around 1930, only the tower was left standing. In 1942, the tower was renovated, but in October 1944, during World War II, it was severely damaged. The tower has undergone minimal restoration to prevent further decay. The cemetery surrounds the tower, and an urn wall has been set up inside the tower itself.

Located in the heart of the Overloon Dunes, Schaartven is a remarkably clear fen surrounded by forest and heathland. Its water is fed by rain and groundwater, making it a sensitive nature reserve. The area surrounding the fen is a popular spot for dragonflies, frogs, and waterfowl, adding to the vibrancy of this tranquil landscape. The contrast between the open water and the surrounding sand dunes creates a unique atmosphere. Hikers experience a blend of tranquility, expansive views, and intimate woodland paths. Especially in the early morning or at sunset, Schaartven has an almost picturesque appearance.

The Oude Toren is the ruin of the tower of the former church of Bergen, located on the Oude Kerkstraat. . The Oude Toren, a Romanesque building, built of ironstone, dates from 1230. In October 1944, the tower was destroyed by war violence. The war damage was only partially repaired. A preserved tower ruin was the result. The first section of the tower consists of ironstone, and the higher sections of marlstone. Nowadays, the tower serves as an urn chapel.

Because Nieuw-Bergen lacked a distinctive church tower, this landmark "monadnock's abstract tower" was built. The publicly accessible tower offers panoramic views of the surrounding nature reserves.

The building seems somewhat deserted, its position being contested by the neighboring supermarket and the charging stations in the area that we like to use.
