This church in Erle has a patron saint's name that is truly on everyone's lips, but only a few will know the person behind it: Saint Sylvester's commemoration day is December 31st. He lived at the end of the third and beginning of the fourth century and was Bishop of Rome when Emperor Constantine recognized Christianity as a religion with the Edict of Milan - known as the "Edict of Toleration" - and thus ended (at least temporarily) the period of bloody persecution of Christians.

"It is wonderful to take a walk around the Schermbeck mill ponds - completely relaxed in the shade of the trees. Paths lead directly along the banks in large areas. In the past, the ponds were regularly frozen over in winter and served as an ice skating rink for entire generations. In the warmer seasons, they are a playground and romping place for ducks and swans. There is something incredibly calming about the view across the water into the light rows of birch trees and the dense branches of weeping willows that dip their tips into the pond. Life around the pond may change every day - but here everything stays the same when swans quietly circle around." https://www.wir-sind-schermbeck.de/tourismus/sehenswertes/219-muehlenteich

Architecture and furnishings This is a neo-Gothic red brick building with a double-tower façade and a short transept. The double-tower façade is followed by a two-bay hall, which is followed by a two-bay, three-aisled hall with narrower side aisles, which appears to be a transept from the outside. The single-bay choir with a 5/8 end forms the end. To the south of the choir is a kind of patron's box on the ground floor, to the north is the sacristy. The roof over the transept is hipped. The windows have sandstone tracery. The furnishings can be roughly divided into two sections. The pews are neo-Gothic, as is the organ facade and stage. The Stations of the Cross are modern, as are the choir stalls in the transept and the celebration altar. The high altar, which was obviously built shortly before the Council and is rare enough for such a rather simple work to still be standing, is also a “typical 1950s work”.
