Michael (mimirsbrunnen)
August 10, 2026, Demmin Gate

The town wall of Altentreptow (then Treptow an der Tollense) was built around 1450 with three town gates and a supplementary rampart. The Demmin Gate was located in the northeast and secured the road to Demmin. Originally, like the Brandenburg Gate, it was a higher gate tower with a pointed arch passage. Today, the gate is only preserved as a single-story structure with a pointed arch passage and 19th-century additions (height approx. 12 m).

It is a brick building in Gothic architecture. Characteristic features include the stepped gable on the front, a pointed arch passage, and a five-story tower with a gable roof. The upper floors are decorated with typical blind tracery.

In 1698, a predecessor mill burned down. The new building from 1845 was a massive half-timbered structure and one of the largest buildings in the city next to the church. Together with the granary, it formed a striking "mill gate" in the cityscape.

The old town is compact, well-preserved and especially interesting for friends of quiet, authentic Mecklenburg small-town history.

After the Thirty Years' War, large parts of the city wall and rampart were removed. Besides the Brandenburg Gate, the Demmin Gate (with a high tower) and remains of the fortifications were preserved. The third gate (Mühlentor) was demolished in 1844.

Attention! Although this cycle path is new, the 5 barriers along the way are also new; in fact, the cycle path is not barrier-free!
