My hike up the Vegatrappa (13.05.2026) got stopped twice. First by a closed signboard Stengt/Closed and second on an alternative route by a destroyed stairway. I was already puzzeled by leaving the Komoot track wandering about the right direction but as you can only follow the stairs I attributed the deviations to the level of correctness the App can provide. Wrong! Reality is, massive rock slides have destroyed the upper part of the stairways making it unwise to proceed. There is hardly any conclusive public information available to make people aware of the same. Sad! Understanding that Vegatrappa plays a major part in attracting tourists to the island might contribute to the media silence on this fact. However, I have to emphasis, that a good part of the stairway is still in excellent conditions and offers great distance views not only towards Søla Island. Perfect place for a Coffee & Cake break (BYO).

From the top of the Vegatrappa ladder, you can enjoy an exceptional and unique view of the coast, Vegatrappa Island, and the open sea. You can see the sea stretching far into the distance toward the far north. It is a particularly striking place and moment.

This last section of the Vegatrappa ladders is particularly impressive. It is very steep and winds its way through a narrow passage between two rock faces. The view is incredible. If you are prone to vertigo, it is best to stop before this last section.

This hut is perfectly nestled in the middle of the rocks to enjoy a wide open view on the sea from a nice wooden terrace with tables and benches.

The view here is hardly worse than at the summit. It is therefore not necessarily worth walking to the summit because of the view. But if you do go all the way up, I would recommend walking to the second peak, which is south of the mountain station.

Many steps but also easy and doable with children (or dogs). For those who are afraid of heights, the way back may be a bit steep.

Amazing surround view, nice if you don't have enough time to go all the way to the top.
