To view the stunning gorge and three bridges, it costs £2 per person. There's a small free car park and a café for refreshments. The path is very narrow and consists of steep stairs. Not suitable for unfit people. It only takes 10mins to complete the short loop. The three bridges show a history of crossing the gorge through the centures. The first and lowest bridge was built by monks in 11th century. Around 1754 a second bridge (middle bridge) was built on top if the first, with ornate iron railings. In 1901 the third bridge was built, again with a modern copy of the iron original railings.

Well worth stopping and admiring if enroute and depending on your love for engineering may well be worth the detour, too.

Beautiful valley roads and relatively gentle gradients to this beauty spot. Can be windy and exposed, but otherwise a lovely place to stop.

Devil's Bridge is a well known tourist highlight in the heart of the Cambrian Mountains. You can view the bridges from the road, but there are also 2 walks for which you can pay a small entrance fee. The walks take you through the gorge to spectacular waterfalls, the longer walk is along steep and uneven natural stone steps - not one to try in your cycling shoes!

For example, the Devil's Bridge and Waterfalls – Devil's Bridge Train Station loop is a moderate circular hike that takes you past the famous bridges and waterfalls. Another great option is the Devil's Bridge Train Station – Afon Mynach Footbridge loop.
The terrain varies, but generally, you can expect a mix of woodland paths, riverside trails, and some sections with steps, especially near the waterfalls. The area is characterized by dramatic gorges and rolling hills, so some routes will have moderate elevation changes. Paths are generally well-maintained, but sturdy footwear is always recommended.
Absolutely! The most iconic landmark is the Devil's Bridge itself, a unique series of three bridges stacked one upon the other. Many trails offer views of this historic site. You'll also encounter numerous waterfalls, particularly along the Mynach and Rheidol rivers. The historic Hafod Estate, with its landscaped grounds and Gothic Arch, is another notable feature on routes like the Peiran Falls loop. For other natural highlights, consider exploring the Clywedog Dam or the Pen Pumlumon Llygad-Bychan summit.
Yes, the Vale of Rheidol Railway offers a scenic narrow-gauge steam train journey from Aberystwyth directly into Pontarfynach (Devil's Bridge). This can be a fantastic part of the family adventure, allowing you to appreciate the Rheidol Valley's beauty before or after your hike. Check their schedule for operating days and times.
Spring and summer are generally ideal for family hiking in Pontarfynach, with milder weather and longer daylight hours. The waterfalls are often at their most impressive after rainfall, which can occur year-round. Autumn offers beautiful foliage, while winter can be picturesque but may present colder, wetter conditions and potentially slippery paths, so appropriate gear is essential.
Many trails in the Pontarfynach area are dog-friendly, but it's always best to keep dogs on a lead, especially around livestock and in nature reserves. The woodland paths and open areas are generally suitable for dogs. Always check specific trail regulations, particularly for attractions like the Devil's Bridge Waterfalls Nature Trail, which may have restrictions or require dogs to be on a very short lead.
Parking is available in and around the village of Devil's Bridge, often near the main attractions and trailheads. For stroller-friendly options, look for wider, flatter paths within the Hafod Estate or sections of the Hafren Forest, though these may require driving a short distance from Pontarfynach.
