"But there was something else that bothered me: 'My relative Edward's books are generally arranged alphabetically, but he always made exceptions,' I said, looking at our guest. 'Is that also the case in your father's library?' - 'I never paid attention to that, because I don't read books,' was the surprisingly gruff reply. 'You probably have better things to do,' I replied, refraining from a biting comment. 'Life writes the strangest stories. Even the most imaginative novelist can't keep up with them,' Holmes quoted one of his favorite theories. 'Nevertheless, I can assure you that you're missing out on something if you completely forgo reading books.' 'I certainly can't imagine a life without books,' I agreed, but decided not to mention that I was actually a bookseller by trade.' (from the book 'Sherlock Holmes and the Trail of the Yeti' by Franziska Franke)

Embarking on the Tan Hill climb from Whaw, deep in Arkengarthdale, you’ll immediately tackle steep ramps as the narrow road surges upwards from the valley floor, likely hitting gradients of 12-15%+ in places early on. Experience the stunning views unfolding back down the dale. However, the defining characteristic soon becomes the immense exposure as you break out onto the vast, high moorland. Feel the wind, often a fierce challenge here, potentially impacting your effort more than the steady gradient across the open tops. Embrace the feeling of remoteness and the wild beauty as you head towards the lonely, iconic landmark of Tan Hill Inn, Britain's highest pub.

We called in here on a busy but wet bank holiday Sunday after hiking nearby Hoove Hill. Despite the horrid weather, the pub cheered us up no end. We had nice service—I mean, really nice, friendly smiles, polite, attentive, and were super quick. The food was also good, not the biggest portions I have had in a pub, but it was all very filling, quick, and well presented. All this at a decent price too. £42, for a main course meal with two drinks. It is obvious that the highest pub in Britain also has high standards, see you again soon!

Really enjoyable climb winding it's way up the valley, some steep sections to contend with.

Epic climb with brutal finish before plateauing and taking in the long descent. Headwind was relentless and a battle to stay on the bike at the top. No mean feat getting up there any day. 👍

Very challenging hill climb! Long and steep you don't want a headwind on this one! But once at the top the views and descent make it worth it. 👍
