Further description by Christa Jakob: The "Wamperte," as its name suggests, is a massive, thick wayside shrine with an octagonal shape. Mysterious and shrouded in legend, it stands in an open field in the "Unterbirting" area. Its construction is attributed to the first half of the 15th century. Only up close does the uniqueness of this red sandstone wayside shrine become apparent. The massive lower section is constructed of hewn stone slabs and is topped by a large, square slab (dating from around 1500). The pointed-arch Gothic niche placed on top likely originated from a demolished 14th-century building, perhaps from the Hörersdorf church, which bears traces of numerous reconstructions, or from the old pilgrimage church of St. Anna, demolished in 1785. Between 1992 and 1996, a lightning strike damaged the Wamperte cross.
