April 4, 2026, Brüderstraße Görlitz

At the Görlitz Information, we get tickets for the city tour. It starts right away. We learn that the city is considered the largest protected monument in Germany. First mentioned in 1071 in a deed by Heinrich IV, the salt road and the Via Regia crossed here. The baroque Napoleonhaus is striking; Napoleon and other emperors stayed here. We listen to what is being said; the city is still strongly connected to Silesian traditions. The city survived World War II almost unscathed; the eastern part now belongs to Poland. We walk through Brüderstraße, characterized by merchants' and hall houses, and also see seating niche portals, some particularly elaborately decorated. Now we stand next to the town hall and enter the unsanitized hall house at Brüderstraße 9 opposite, which belonged to wealthy cloth merchants. The height inside is astonishing; in the light-flooded hall, the bales of cloth were unrolled and presented. Afterwards, we pass through the town hall, originally built in 1350, into the town hall courtyard. The sight is astonishing; the archive wing was built in 1534 by Wendel Roskopf and the court oriel by his son. We feel the past time in the courtyard; old dungeons are next to us. Also, probably the most beautiful hall house, the Schönhof, in the Renaissance style, now home to the Silesian Museum, was built in 1526 under Wendel Roskopf. https://youtu.be/eU7pe2jPE-Q

Shortly thereafter, we reach the Postplatz with charming historic buildings from the 19th century. Let's look at the post office, the regional court, the Palais Victoria, and the Muschelminna fountain. The Frauenkirche is also located here. It is open, let's go inside. The style is now completely different from the cathedral visited at the beginning; the Frauenkirche is built in the Gothic architectural style, with the foundation stone laid in 1459. Striking is the net rib vault with the decorated keystones. During the restoration in the choir, a wall painting from 1570 was uncovered next to some epitaphs. There is currently an exhibition here about Jakob Böhme, who was the first to write philosophical texts in the German language. Back outside, we see the Dicken Turm, part of the former city fortifications, with the historic city coat of arms and walk past the Annenkapelle. https://youtu.be/eU7pe2jPE-Q

Yes, unfortunately, the new industrial area is progressing slowly so that the buildings are continuing to decay
