"...A bridge that connects the town center with the animal enclosure. A bridge that brings the residents of Weeze to the zoo faster and more beautifully, and that brings guests of the recreational area faster and more beautifully to the town center. A bridge that also offers a wonderful view of the renaturalized area of the Niers River. The bridge flows into the Niers Promenade on the town center side, bringing the Niers into the town center and making the Niers more accessible even in the town center. The promenade offers many beautiful places to linger, offers views of the picturesque Hertefeld Castle and the castle gardens, and provides space for a pleasant after-work stroll..." https://www.weeze.de/leben-wohnen/bauenwohnen/bauprojekte/nierspromenade

The municipality of Weeze is one of the oldest settlements in the Lower Rhine region. It looks back on a fine, eventful history, which can be traced in the town center. 👉 https://www.weeze.de/rathaus-service/gemeinde-weeze/geschichte

"When the House of Hertefeld was first mentioned in 1322, Ludwig IV of Bavaria was just capturing his Habsburg adversary, Frederick "the Fair," near Mühldorf – in what was likely the last knightly battle without firearms. Finds within the ruins prove that the site has been in use since the 13th century. Archaeological excavations have also revealed a predecessor building at the core of the current ruins, dating back to the 14th century, but hardly any concrete conclusions can be drawn about its shape. At that time, Weeze had already been settled for more than 500 years – and the Hertefeld family was probably busy with some construction site – just like today! Hertefeld Castle has been rebuilt and renovated many times throughout its history, mostly around the turn of the century from 1600 onwards. Detailed descriptions would go too far here, but with a bit of luck, one or another family member might tell you a little more about the interesting history of this unusual place. For all others, a corresponding encyclopedia is being prepared, with publication planned for the beginning of the 22nd century. In any case, the romantic ruins offer visitors diverse and unique insights into truly tangible (architectural) history. https://www.hertefeld.de/geschichte/

"The Nierspromenade is part of the integrated action plan. It began with the redesign of Cyriakusplatz and the associated establishment of a full-range supermarket and a drugstore. The new Volksbank building on Kevelaerer Straße was also part of the new look of Cyriakusplatz. In a second step, a section of Kevelaerer Straße was renovated. The establishment of a discount store and the redesign of the forecourt of the Alpago ice cream parlor rounded out the picture. The plan to make the town center even more attractive and fill it with life was then summarized in an 'Integrated Action Plan,' which was developed together with the residents in many workshops. The municipality of Weeze was the first municipality of its size to develop such an action plan in North Rhine-Westphalia. These measures, intended to bring more life to the town center, included the reconstruction of the connecting road between the municipality's central squares, Cyriakusplatz and the Alter Markt, and the construction of the new Community center, the redesign of Vittinghoff-Schell Park, and the construction of the Niers Bridge to the zoo and the Niers Promenade. A bridge that connects the town center with the animal enclosure. A bridge that brings Weez residents to the zoo faster and more beautifully, and visitors to the recreational area faster and more beautifully to the town center. A bridge that also offers a wonderful view of the renaturalized area of the Niers. The bridge flows into the Niers Promenade on the town center side, bringing the Niers into the town center and making the Niers more accessible even in the town center. The promenade offers many beautiful places to linger, offers views of the picturesque Hertefeld Castle and the castle gardens, and provides space for a pleasant after-work stroll. The Nierspromenade is rounded off by the traffic-safe ferry dock and the resulting improved connection of the ferry park to the town center..." https://www.weeze.de/leben-wohnen/bauenwohnen/bauprojekte/nierspromenade
