A shelter among meadows and thickets, immersed in that specific silence with birdsong and insect noise in the background. Powered by solar panels, with a wood stove, good water from a well, a shower and outdoor privies. Inside, a charming atmosphere in the dining room downstairs, only mattresses upstairs. When I stayed overnight, there was only the Host, helpful and discreet.

A very accessible trail. And after reaching the station in Balnica, you can still walk 350 m along the tracks to Bobrowisko. Lovely place

A tree-covered hill among meadows. There was once a wooden Greek Catholic church here from 1789. After World War II, the village inhabitants left or were forcibly displaced, and the village and the church were destroyed. Today, only traces of the foundation and the former cemetery remain of the church.

Sources of the Osława River. In 1999, several pairs of beavers were released here and they have settled in for good. From the viewing platform we can see the wetlands created by beavers and the lodges. With a bit of luck or a lot of patience, you can even see the beavers themselves.

The final station of the Bieszczady tourist railway. There is a large shelter for resting here.

Trains only run in the summer season. I saw a direct TLK connection to Krakow on the list.

The region around Humenné is rich in natural beauty. Many trails lead through the picturesque Vihorlat Mountains, a UNESCO World Heritage site known for its primeval beech forests. You can also discover unique rock formations like Sninský Kameň and the stunning Morské Oko lake, often referred to as the 'Sea Eye'.
Yes, there are several circular routes that are great for families. One popular option is the Sninský Kameň – Morské Oko Fishery loop from Morské oko, which offers a rewarding journey through diverse landscapes and takes you past the beautiful Morské Oko lake.
Beyond the natural wonders, you can integrate visits to historical sites. The ruins of Jasenov Castle and Brekov Castle, perched on hills, offer scenic views and a glimpse into the region's past. The town of Humenné also has an open-air museum showcasing traditional wooden architecture.
Spring, summer, and early autumn are generally the best seasons for family hiking around Humenné. The weather is usually pleasant, and the landscapes are vibrant. Autumn offers beautiful foliage, while summer is ideal for combining hikes with activities at Domaša Reservoir.
While many trails are family-friendly, most routes in the Vihorlat Mountains, including those to Sninský Kameň and Morské Oko, involve uneven terrain and elevation changes that are not typically suitable for strollers. For toddlers, consider shorter, flatter sections or the dedicated walking trail within Humenné itself, which covers about 4 km and passes by cultural sights.
Many trails in the Humenné region, including those in the Vihorlat Protected Landscape Area, are generally dog-friendly. However, it's always recommended to keep dogs on a leash, especially in protected areas, and to check specific regulations for national parks like Poloniny if your route extends into them. Always ensure you clean up after your pet.
Parking availability varies by trailhead. For popular destinations like Morské Oko, there are designated parking areas, though they can fill up during peak season. For other routes, you might find parking in nearby villages or designated spots. It's advisable to check specific route details for parking information.
Public transport options exist, though they might require some planning. Buses connect Humenné to various villages surrounding the Vihorlat Mountains and Domaša Reservoir. For specific trailheads like Morské Oko, you might need to combine bus travel with a walk or a short taxi ride from the nearest village. Checking local bus schedules in advance is recommended.
The komoot community highly rates the hiking experiences around Humenné, with an average score of 4.88 stars. Reviewers often praise the stunning natural beauty, particularly around Morské Oko and Sninský Kameň, and the well-maintained paths that make for enjoyable family outings.
While most routes in this guide are moderate, for families with very young children or those seeking a very gentle walk, consider exploring the immediate vicinity of Domaša Reservoir for leisurely strolls and picnics. The town of Humenné also offers a 4 km walking trail that passes by historical and cultural sights, which is a good option for an easy outing.
