The geographical center of the canton of Zurich was found in 2007 in a project work by vocational students and high school students.

The “Manne mit Schpeuz”, an association of retired people from Wangen, had got wind of the fact that the middle of the canton was on their home ground and had this officially confirmed. Two teachers from the Uster Education Center heard about this and offered a cross-school project with the aim of precisely determining the geometric center of the canton.

On November 17, 2007, the center of the canton of Zurich was ceremoniously marked under the patronage and in the presence of government colleague Ursula Gut. An iron sculpture and a plaque on a mighty erratic block were anchored at the location above Wangen.

Glattenried Nature Reserve

Highlight • Natural Monument

The wetland is located in the area of the city of Uster on the northern edge of the settlement area between the district of Gschwader and the outer guard Werrikon. Together with the immediately north adjoining Werriker Riet and the Chilenriet in the west, it forms a wetland area with an area of almost half a square kilometer. Like the surrounding landscape, the wide depression was shaped by the Linth-Rhein glacier in glacial morphology during the cold ages. In the vicinity there are lakes and other flat moors such as the Hopperenried [2] moraines, boulders and drumlins, which also go back to the landscape-shaping effect of the glacier.

On the west side, important traffic routes lead over heaped dams past Glattenried and Chileried: Zürichstrasse from Uster via Werrikon to Volketswil and the S-Bahn route 5 Pfäffikon – Zürich HB between Uster station and Nänikon-Greifensee station cross the wetland. They intersect at the Werrikon level crossing, which has been a longstanding problem in Uster's traffic planning. [3]

The Werrikerbach flows out of the wetland and flows into the Greifensee at Greifensee and is thus a tributary of the Glatt. There are some groundwater outcrops in the bog.

There are several ponds in Glattenried, some of which come from a former fish farm.

Project in the Stocklen

Highlight • Natural Monument

The inauguration took place on Saturday, October 3rd, 2020.
On around five hectares - or seven football fields - the Greifensee Foundation, together with partners, experts and donors in Fällanden, has created biodiverse areas. The existing areas were transferred to a wetland, renatured, replanted and networked with existing nature conservation areas. This created open and spacious habitats that beautify the landscape and offer endangered species unique living conditions.

Wildert Raised-Bog Nature Reserve

Highlight (Segment) • Natural Monument

The Wildert is the largest nature reserve in the municipality of Illnau-Effretikon and of national importance. It is majority owned by Pro Natura.
The special feature of the Wildert is the large raised bog in the center of the area. Here peat mosses form high bulbs and overgrow the dead, fallen trees. In between, other typical bog plants such as the cranberry or carnivorous sundew flourish.

Lochrüti Pond

Highlight • Lake

In August 2003, work began on the new Lochrüti II wetland biotope in Wangen.
After more than 15 years of preparation, there was finally a chance, the canton was able to make the land available for nature conservation by exchanging land with the owner. Various ponds and ponds had been dug and sealed by the end of the year. As part of the “Operation Läbhag”, the women's association Brüttisellen planted a hedge over 100m long on November 1st. Additional structures are planned to be sheltered especially for obstetrician toads, gravel areas, tree sticks and grown (not planted) hedges.
