Mar-2025 Part of the hiking trails to Realejo Alto were closed due to forest fire damage. It was impossible to get through. Unfortunately, there was no information at the start of the tour in Realejo Alto either.

Unfortunately, riding on public roads is much more dangerous than here in Wiesbaden, which is why the routes away from them seem more pleasant and safer. The new Corratec fully eBikes were ideal for the demanding terrain and mastered every challenge in the Barrancos with ease.

Brilliant ride ,especially the downhill rollercoaster into Costa Teguise. Dont take the wide path straight down to the road but carry along the singletrack. It continues for a couple of miles Better to start ride from Costa Teguise and head north along sore to Charco del palo and the across to Mala + Guitiza Roller coaster starts just after the orange coloured house and enclosure., turn right. If you want a more technical version, after the start of the downhill turn left, there is another track 100 m higher up which runs more or less parallel to main track. When you get to where it flattens off leave the bikes and walk up to the top of the volcano, takes 20-30 mins but well worth it

The Canary Islands offer incredibly diverse mountain biking terrain. You'll find everything from volcanic landscapes and pine forests to challenging singletrack, rocky descents, and flowy forest trails. Gran Canaria is known for its variety, from soft forest paths to rocky challenges. Lanzarote features unique lunar-like volcanic sand and badlands, while Fuerteventura offers vast, arid landscapes and long sandy trails. La Gomera and El Hierro provide routes through ancient laurisilva forests and dramatic volcanic formations.
For advanced downhill and technical riding, several islands stand out. Gran Canaria offers challenging rocky terrain and technical sections, especially on descents from Pico de las Nieves. La Palma is highly recommended for its epic descents from high altitudes to sea level, with trails featuring dried-out riverbeds on lava rocks, steep rock faces, berms, and jump features. Tenerife also provides challenging routes with significant elevation loss, such as the Jama Trail.
Yes, there are family-friendly options available. While many trails cater to experienced riders, some areas offer easier routes. For instance, the Chanajiga Recreation Area in Tenerife is noted as family-friendly. Lanzarote's unique volcanic landscapes also offer routes suitable for various skill levels, including easier loops. Fuerteventura's gentle terrain and long sandy trails can also be suitable for families, though strong winds should be considered.
The Canary Islands are an excellent destination for mountain biking year-round due to their mild climate. Gran Canaria, in particular, is widely considered one of Europe's top winter mountain biking destinations. While pleasant throughout the year, be aware that strong winds can occur, especially in Fuerteventura during summer. Always check local weather conditions before heading out.
Many islands offer bike rental services. For example, La Palma has dedicated services like Emotion Cycling La Palma Bikestore & Rental. In Gran Canaria, areas like Fataga are known for their mountain biking trails, with amenities like the Free Motion bike stop. It's advisable to check with local bike shops or tour operators on each island for specific rental options and up-to-date trail access information.
The Canary Islands are rich in stunning viewpoints and natural features. The Hilera de la Cumbre Trail (GR-131) on La Palma offers beautiful panoramas of both sides of the island. Tenerife's trails provide dramatic scenery, including volcanic landscapes and impressive pine forests, with routes offering views of the Teide National Park. Lanzarote's Timanfaya National Park and the cliffs of Famara offer unique volcanic and coastal vistas. El Hierro also boasts diverse landscapes from pine forests to lava fields and dense jungle.
Yes, several islands feature notable circular routes. Tenerife offers the difficult 45.7 km Las Lagunetas Loop Trail through the Paisaje Protegido de las Lagunetas. On La Palma, you can find a difficult 40.8 km loop around Roque de los Muchachos and Pinar de Garafía. Lanzarote has the 18.1-mile Ruta del Coral y Ruta del Norte exploring the natural park, and Fuerteventura offers the Corralejo North Coast and Volcanoes Loop. El Hierro also has a circular route from Valverde exploring the central part of the island.
Beyond mountain biking, the Canary Islands offer a wealth of outdoor activities. You can explore various hiking trails, such as the challenging Vilaflor and Paisaje Lunar loop in Tenerife or the moderate Caldera Blanca loop in Lanzarote. Gravel biking is also popular, with routes like the Gravel tour around El Hierro or the Gran Guanche route in Tenerife. For more details on these activities, you can check out the Hiking in the Canary Islands guide or the Gravel biking in the Canary Islands guide.
Gran Canaria is widely considered to offer one of the most diverse mountain biking experiences. Its extensive network of trails caters to all levels, from novices to experts, with routes spanning from high-altitude descents to the ocean. You'll find everything from soft forest paths to highly technical rocky sections, making it a versatile choice for any rider.
Yes, some bike trails pass near or through areas with historical and cultural significance. For example, the village of Fataga in Gran Canaria, with its Church of Saint Joseph, is an idyllic mountain village surrounded by awesome MTB trails and offers a glimpse into local culture. Lanzarote's Pedales de Lava route traverses the impressive Timanfaya National Park, an area shaped by volcanic eruptions with a unique history.
La Palma, known as 'La Isla Bonita,' is unique for its stunning natural beauty and exceptional network of mountain biking trails, particularly for those seeking long descents. It offers amazing trails that go from top to bottom with insane views, providing epic descents from high altitudes to sea level. The island's diverse terrain includes dense vegetation, technical trails, and volcanic landscapes, making it a favorite for enduro and freeride enthusiasts, such as the El Pilar – La Salemera route.
Fuerteventura is characterized by its vast, arid landscapes, long sandy trails, and volcanic terrain, making it ideal for cross-country and all-mountain riding. Routes like the multi-stage Tracks Fuerteventura allow you to discover cliffs, beaches, and volcanic areas. The island's gentle terrain and pleasant climate are increasingly popular, but riders should be prepared for strong winds, especially in summer, and carry enough water as amenities can be sparse in remote areas like Cofete.
