Flughafensee

Highlight • Lake

The Airport Lake is a quarry lake and thus an artificially created bathing area. It was created in the 1950s through local gravel mining.
With a maximum depth of approximately 34.3 m, the Airport Lake is the deepest lake in Berlin. Due to its depth, the Airport Lake is divided into a high-capacity main basin and a forebay basin (settlement basin). The two basins are separated by an algae barrier, which is intended to limit the entry of undesirable substances (especially nutrients) into the main basin by converting nutrients into biomass (algae) in the forebay basin. The deep water aeration system, installed in 1986, supports biological degradation in the forebay basin and helps prevent oxygen depletion. The lake is approximately 30 hectares in size and has a water volume of approximately 3.6 million m³.

Flughafensee Beach

Highlight • Beach

The small sandy beach is well-visited on warm days. The water's access is shallow. There are a few wooden seating areas on the beach. Otherwise, there's a lovely view of the airport lake.

Rainwater runoff reaches the airport lake primarily via the main tributary, the Schwarzer Graben Canal, which collects rainwater from large areas (approximately 700 hectares) south of Reinickendorf. Before reaching the airport lake, the Schwarzer Graben Canal passes through a settling basin where particulate matter is sedimented.

Sandy Beach at Flughafensee

Highlight • Beach

A beautiful view, spring calm, summer bustle, many people come here to bathe. Watch out for wild boar. I highly recommend this place.

From this vantage point you can see the airport lake well. Under a mushroom with seat here is also a rest on overlooking the lake.

From the airport pier you have a beautiful view of the basin, especially in the evening hours.

A jetty takes you directly onto the airport lake, giving you an even better view of the lake. Incidentally, the lake is the deepest lake in Berlin at 34 meters.
