Lions' Bastion at the Maschsee

Highlight (Segment) • Monument

The lion bastion was created at the time of National Socialism in 1934 in connection with the construction of the Maschsee. On its waterfront in the east of the inland water, the defensive-looking bastion-style observation platform was built.

City board number 135:

In 1937 the city placed the 4.5 m tall statue "Torch Bearer" by Hermann Scheuertstuhl (1894-1982) on the 18 m high pillar that had already been erected for the inauguration of the Maschsee. Nazi art heroized "health" and "strength". The naked figure posted on a ball refers to the Hitler salute and the Olympic flame, which was first carried by the Olympics to the Games in 1936. The "Victory Column" took over the construction of the lake and glorified the Nazi state with the inscription on the base. In 1945 the swastika was knocked out.

Maschsee Lido

Highlight • Beach

The lido on the south shore was opened in 1937. The complex with the historic entrance area and the changing rooms is now a listed building. Since its opening, the bathroom has been very popular with families and older people in particular - but in the summer, Hannover is also the place to be.

The sculpture is by the sculptor Hermann Scheuernstuhl. It dates from 1937, an example of Nazi art in Hanover.

It's hard to miss it on a bike either...

The pathetic kitsch typical of the Nazi era. The surrounding examples of modern art are more worth seeing.

September 21, 2022, Maschseequelle

To fill the artificial lake with water, the architect Schlenstedt designed a system with a pump and filter house in clinker construction. Both houses are connected by a pergola equipped with benches. Towards the Maschsee there is an upstream pool that slopes down in steps, which was enlivened by six small fountains and over which a bridge leads. For the first time in November 1935, the pumps integrated in the structure raised the water for the Maschsee from the Leine. It first flowed through two drum screens and was - if necessary - also cleaned by an additional filter system before it escaped at the artificial, so-called "Maschseequelle". The Maschsee is a stage and backdrop, a sports field and local recreation area - in short, it is the heart of the Lower Saxony state capital. And even if its official nickname "Hanover's blue eye" suggests otherwise, the people of Hanover love the extensive water surface with the differently designed shore zones and the incomparable panoramic view of the city. In summer and in winter, the lake invites you to a wide range of outdoor activities. The history of the Maschsee is relatively young - and not undisputed. The first plans to create a lake go back to the 19th century. The Maschgebiet was regularly plagued by floods due to the snowmelt in the Harz Mountains. However, financial and water problems delayed the start of construction, and the project was implemented in the years 1934-36 - as a job creation measure by the Nazi regime. Within the low-lying Aegiedienmasch, the 2.4 km long and up to 530 m wide city lake with an area of approx. 80 ha was created. But be careful with jumps: the average depth is just 2 meters! In Hanover everyone knows: a Maschsee circuit is about 6 kilometers long and in winter the ice is open to walk on if it is 13 centimeters thick or more. Source: http://das-strandbad.de/de/geschichte
