The Torchbearer Column is a monument-protected stele with the figure of a torchbearer designed by the sculptor Hermann Scheuernstuhl.

To fill the artificial lake with water, the architect Schlenstedt designed a system with a pump and filter house in clinker construction. Both houses are connected by a pergola equipped with benches. Towards the Maschsee there is an upstream pool that slopes down in steps, which was enlivened by six small fountains and over which a bridge leads. For the first time in November 1935, the pumps integrated in the structure raised the water for the Maschsee from the Leine. It first flowed through two drum screens and was - if necessary - also cleaned by an additional filter system before it escaped at the artificial, so-called "Maschseequelle". The first plans to create a lake go back to the 19th century. The Maschgebiet was regularly plagued by floods due to the snowmelt in the Harz Mountains. However, financial and water problems delayed the start of construction, and the project was implemented in the years 1934-36 - as a job creation measure by the Nazi regime. Within the low-lying Aegiedienmasch, the 2.4 km long and up to 530 m wide city lake with an area of approx. 80 ha was created. But be careful with jumps: the average depth is just 2 meters!
