Coming from Mte Lego, a great Vrb trail to the Sentiero Collina Alta or to then whizz down to Brione sM. S3. Short video: https://youtu.be/-ADu8iED7Zs?si=nhF4V5qYcVUinvMS

After the Rasa Trail https://www.komoot.com/de-de/highlight/133646, after a little refreshment in the grotto of Rasa, this trail (Rasa-Bordei) follows. You absolutely have to keep left at the first junction (Bordei is signposted). It is very difficult to ride at the beginning, if not impossible. But then (as cadillac55555 mentioned before me) it gets a lot better, even wide and flowing - a lot of investment has been made, improvements made and made safer...

Since I took the partially drivable hiking trail from S2 to S3 as a shortcut (50% drivable), I can only speak for the second part of this route. Machines were used to work on the path here and from my point of view it is now only an S1 at most! Which was a very welcome innovation.

This point is an obligatory stop, because it is really worth it, for hikers who have decided to take the beautiful Tamaro->Lema crossing or vice versa Lema->Tamaro 😊

Can you see the Verzasca dam on the right? The opening scene of James Bond Goldeneye was filmed there. I'm referring to Pierce Brosnan's 300m deep bungee jump. In the film, the location was sold to the viewer as Belarus. Now you know better.

Monte Tamaro really rewards the hiker for his effort. The view is amazing. This was my second time doing this hike. It requires a lot of fitness and sure-footedness. I start this tour from Monte Lema and finish it via Alpe Flopa in the Riviera and then return by bus. Our tour was not overcrowded, few hikers came towards us (July)

While Lago Maggiore is primarily known for its extensive mountain biking trails, there are a few distinct areas. For a dedicated bike park experience with lift access and constructed features, San Domenico Bike Park in the Valdivedro Valley is the most prominent, though it's about an hour's drive from Lake Maggiore. Closer to the lake, Mottarone offers a vast network of natural trails with technical sections, but its main cable car lift is currently closed. Laveno Mombello provides varied terrain and a unique 'bucket lift' to Mount Sasso del Ferro that transports bicycles. Additionally, the Lago Maggiore Bike Park on Mount Cargiago focuses on natural, pedaled trails.
Yes, San Domenico Bike Park is designed to cater to all skill levels, including children, with specific 'baby parks' and qualified instructors available. For those seeking natural trails, the Lago Maggiore Bike Park on Mount Cargiago offers six routes designed for all levels, from beginner to expert, focusing on scenic pre-Alpine environments.
San Domenico Bike Park utilizes chairlifts for uphill transport, providing a true downhill experience. In Laveno Mombello, a 'bucket lift' to Mount Sasso del Ferro transports bicycles for a fee, offering access to downhill-oriented rides. Historically, Mottarone had cable car access, but this lift is currently closed.
Mottarone, situated between Lake Maggiore and Lake Orta, is known for its extensive network of natural mountain biking trails. You'll find a variety of terrain, including some sections with constructed elements like berms, jumps, drops, and rock gardens. It offers stunning 360-degree views of seven lakes and the Alps. However, riders should be prepared for uphill pedaling or arranging their own shuttles, as the main cable car lift is currently closed.
Absolutely. The region offers several challenging trails. The S3 Trail Cardada–Sentiero Collina Alta Connection features larger stones and high ledges, with sections rated S3 and S2. The Carbon Trail Entrance is known for being 30% challenging and 70% flowing, with some sections requiring sliding or carrying. Additionally, the Crest Trail Section (Route 201 Monterecchio–Passo Forcora) is recommended only for experts due to difficult stretches with pointy stones and large roots.
The best season for bike parks and mountain biking around Lago Maggiore is generally from spring through autumn. During these months, the weather is typically mild and pleasant, making for ideal riding conditions. Always check local weather forecasts before heading out, especially for higher elevations where conditions can change rapidly.
The Lago Maggiore region is a hub for outdoor activities. You can explore numerous hiking trails, such as those found in the Hiking around Lago Maggiore guide, including routes like 'Cammino del Lago Maggiore: From Cannobio to Ascona'. For road cycling, there are scenic routes like the 'Vallemaggia Cycle Path' detailed in the Cycling around Lago Maggiore guide. Running enthusiasts can find trails like the 'Lake Maggiore Trail' in the Running Trails around Lago Maggiore guide.
For spectacular panoramic views, head to Monte Tamaro. At 1,960 meters, it offers an extreme vantage point with views of a large part of Ticino, including two lakes and surrounding valleys. On a clear day, you can even see both the lowest and highest points in Switzerland. Mottarone also provides stunning 360-degree views of seven lakes and the Alps.
The Rasa–Bordei Trail is a challenging mountain bike trail, particularly at the beginning, where it can be very difficult or even impossible to ride for some. However, sections further along have seen improvements and are now wider and more flowing, making them more accessible. It's generally recommended for experienced riders.
Yes, the bucket lift at Laveno Mombello to Mount Sasso del Ferro offers a unique and scenic way to transport your bike uphill. At San Domenico Bike Park, beyond the trails, you'll find 'baby parks' for the youngest riders, making it a comprehensive family destination. The natural trails of the Lago Maggiore Bike Park on Mount Cargiago emphasize rediscovering unspoiled beauty within a pre-Alpine environment.
The bike parks and trails around Lago Maggiore are characterized by their diverse natural features. You'll encounter pre-Alpine landscapes, dense forests, and trails with natural elements like rock gardens, roots, and challenging descents.
