Early spring can be a great time to ride. Get those legs out that have been dormant all winter and get outside and pedal. Things are beginning to turn green and warmer! Weather can be very finicky during the spring in the midwest. You may have sunshine and 65 degrees F on Monday and clouds and yuk at 35 degrees Tuesday! But the warmth is coming so get out and ride!

The best time to ride during the hot summer months is early in the morning. The only draw back is the humidity will be high making you feel damp.

Late June Early July is wheat harvest in much of the midwestern US. Aside from adding a bit of brown dust in the air ( could be an issue if you have Asthma ) it also adds large tractors and 18 wheel grain haul trucks on these normally empty country roads. Just remember they are at work and you are riding through the middle of their office! Be nice and give way when on a narrow road. Besides you don't stand any chance of winning against a modern farm tractor!! Country folks are always very nice and will appreciate your efforts to return the kindness.

Rural Southern Illinois offers miles of bituminous paved roads ( aka chip seal ). This makes riding any style bike through the fields of corn, soybeans, wheat and even pumpkins ( yep they grow pumpkins in southern Illinois ) easy. A bit of warning however, in late summer, usually August, they start “ oiling “ the roads. This process involves spraying the road way with oil and then spreading crushed or chipped rock on top. Why is this important? After they do this they count on traffic to press the rocking into the oiled surface. This means that there will be loose crushed rock on the road which can be a hazard especially for you who run narrow tires. A month later these roads are just like any other paved road. Get out and enjoy the beautiful farmland of Southern Illinois!
