Embark on a significant road cycling journey with the New Smyrna Beach to Lake Beresford via East Coast Greenway loop, a challenging 79.8-mile (128.5 km) route that typically takes around 5 hours and 43 minutes. With 514 feet (157 metres) of elevation gain, this ride offers a dynamic experience, transitioning from coastal salt marshes to the lush inland ecosystems around Lake Beresford. You'll traverse smooth, paved rail trails and encounter the unique opal-colored waters of Green Springs Park, making it a rewarding ride for cyclists seeking diverse scenery and a good workout.

For planning your trip, be prepared for a mix of dedicated multi-use paths and some on-road sections where the trail network is still being completed. While the route is generally accessible, it's wise to carry ample water and sun protection, especially during warmer months, as shade can be intermittent. Parking is available at various points along the route, including near Lake Beresford Park, but always check local signage. This loop is best enjoyed by experienced road cyclists comfortable with sharing the road in certain areas.

This route is a vital segment of the ambitious 3,000-mile East Coast Greenway and the 260-mile St. Johns River-to-Sea Loop, showcasing Florida's commitment to non-motorized transportation corridors. As you cycle, you'll pass through varied environments, from rural to suburban, and have opportunities to spot diverse wildlife, including manatees in the cooler months near Blue Spring State Park. The continuous development of the trail network means the experience is steadily improving, with more seamless paved paths replacing temporary on-road connections.

The Vergie's Pit-Stop loop from Oak Hill offers a delightful road cycling experience, guiding you through Florida's diverse ecosystems. You'll glide past peaceful cypress groves and fragrant pine flatwoods, with bridges providing scenic crossings over wetlands. This easy 24.8-mile (39.8 km) route, with only 46 feet (14 metres) of elevation gain, is perfect for a relaxed ride, taking just under 2 hours to complete.

Starting from the Oak Hill area, you'll find convenient access and parking for the East Central Regional Rail Trail. A unique and essential stop along the way is Vergie's Pit Stop, which provides cold drinks and snacks on an honor system, a welcome sight where other facilities are scarce. Plan your ride for cooler parts of the day, especially during Florida's warmer seasons.

This route is part of the extensive East Central Regional Rail Trail, a testament to converting old railway lines into accessible paths. It's a valuable regional asset for outdoor enthusiasts, offering a unique opportunity to explore Florida's natural environment on a relatively flat and accessible paved surface. It's an excellent choice for family-friendly activities or anyone seeking a gentle introduction to cycling in the Oak Hill area.

A very beautiful area with a small hiking trail that's definitely worth taking. The view of the river is fantastic. Parking is available, and it's close to the trail. Don't forget insect repellent and a water bottle, as there's nothing on site.

Please stop here, as it's right next to the highway. If there are any animals, you can observe them very well.

The East Central Rail Trail spans 56 miles from end to end and is paved. One end lies at Green Springs Park at Braddock Road in Deltona, and the other at Parrish Park at Titusville. This rail trail is built over the Atlantic Coast, St. Johns, and Indian River Railroads.

The name says it all really, but your chances of spotting a manatee...or ten, are really high here. It's worth hopping off the bike for a short walk to the viewing platform.

June 26, 2024, Space View Park

Space View Park sits just 15 miles from the launch pads, so it is a great spot to watch a shuttle launch. This park also honors America's astronauts and the behind-the-scenes workers in space exploration. The park has picnic areas, restrooms, and is close to downtown restaurants. Come compare your handprints to those of Mercury Astronauts, listen to live audio feeds from NASA's control room, and see the historical walkthrough of space exploration.
