On the way to the lost place. There will soon be a way inside. Unfortunately, I was a bit too early.

Baron Julius von Braun, the starost of Gierdawski County, married to Klara von Belov, née von Borcke, began renovating the estate before World War I. Strongly fascinated by medieval monastic architecture, he decided to build Malbork. Designed by Paul Engler, the complex, including a residential building, was one of Prussia's most interesting architectural concepts. It features a well-preserved entrance gate and three towers, one of which served as a cold storage/icehouse, the other as a water tower with a water tank. The entire project was cost-prohibitive beyond the baron's capabilities, and in 1930 the estate was auctioned off, and some of the buildings, including the residential building, were demolished. Currently, the property is owned by Mr. Wiśniewski (owner of WIPASZ).

The castle in Barciany is an impressive example of Gothic Teutonic architecture from the 14th century, located on a small hill surrounded by former marshes. Although it lacks tall towers, it has retained its massive shape and defensive character, making it an interesting testimony to the evolution of monastic castles. After the war, it served economic functions and is currently closed to visitors, although its silhouette can be admired from the outside. The castle is easy to reach by bike, it is worth planning a short stop here for photos and to learn the history of the place.

Frequently Asked Questions

What types of historical sites can I explore directly within Gmina Korsze?

Within Gmina Korsze, you can explore the ruins of Sątoczno Castle, a site with deep roots in the Teutonic Order's history, dating back to 1326. It offers a glimpse into medieval defensive structures and archaeological interest. Additionally, visit the Warnikajmy Historic Farm Complex, often called 'Little Malbork,' an early 20th-century architectural marvel designed to mimic a fortified castle. While not a medieval castle, its unique design and history are fascinating.

Are there any well-preserved castles near Gmina Korsze that I can visit?

Yes, several well-preserved castles are located near Gmina Korsze. You can visit Reszel Castle, which served as a German Order residence and now functions as a hotel and museum. Another notable site is Kętrzyn Castle, a well-restored 14th-century Ordensburg that now houses a museum and library. These offer a more complete castle experience than the local ruins.

What is the history behind the Sątoczno Castle ruins?

The Sątoczno Castle, originally 'castrum Lunenburg,' was built by the Teutonic Order in 1326 on an Old Prussian stronghold site. It was initially a wooden-earth fortification, later replaced by brick and stone. The castle faced destruction multiple times, notably by a Lithuanian invasion in 1347. Its strategic importance waned, and it was eventually dismantled in 1628. Archaeological research at the turn of the 21st century led to the identification and partial uncovering of its remains, offering a tangible link to the region's turbulent medieval past.

What makes the Warnikajmy Historic Farm Complex unique?

The Warnikajmy Historic Farm Complex is unique for its early 20th-century historicizing architecture, designed to mimic a fortified castle. Nicknamed 'Little Malbork,' it features a gate tower, cloisters, and bastions, inspired by well-preserved Teutonic structures like Malbork Castle. Although an actual neo-Gothic castle within the complex was dismantled, the surviving farm buildings still present an impressive architectural ensemble, showcasing a fascinating blend of modern design and medieval inspiration.

Are there family-friendly castles or historical sites in the Gmina Korsze area?

Yes, several sites are suitable for families. Reszel Castle and Kętrzyn Castle are both categorized as family-friendly, offering museums and historical exploration. Are there any less crowded or 'hidden gem' historical sites to visit?

For a less crowded experience focusing on historical intrigue rather than grand preservation, the Sątoczno Castle ruins offer a unique 'hidden gem.' It's a site for those interested in archaeology and the raw history of the Teutonic Order, providing a quiet, reflective experience away from more popular tourist spots. The Warnikajmy Historic Farm Complex also offers a distinctive architectural experience that is less frequented than the larger, more traditional castles.

Can I visit Barciany Teutonic Castle, and what should I know about it?

Layered clothing is recommended, especially during spring and autumn, to adapt to changing weather conditions. A waterproof jacket can be useful, as the weather in the Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship can be unpredictable. For winter visits, warm clothing, including hats, gloves, and sturdy, waterproof footwear, is essential.

Are there options for parking when visiting these historical sites?

Parking availability varies by site. For the more established castles like Reszel Castle and Kętrzyn Castle, you will typically find designated parking areas nearby, often paid.
