<< Baluard de Sant Bernat, Ibiza >> "The military might of the Spanish between the 16th and 18th centuries meant that Spain was able to become a world power and colonise much of the New World. There are few better places to learn about Spain's military past than at the Baluard de Sant Jaume in Ibiza. Located in the historic Dalt Vila district of Ibiza Town, the Baluard de Sant Bernat is one of the oldest military bastions in the Balearic Islands. The bastion is now open to visitors and displays military uniforms, armour and artillery from the 16th to 18th centuries. The construction of the bastion dates back to the days when Ibiza's residents lived in fear of pirate invasions. The bastion was able to defend the town and keep it prospering throughout Spain's Golden Age. A tour of the site will take you through the development of military technology over three centuries and see cannons, swords, Pistols, bombs and rifles from that era. There are interactive areas of the museum where you can try lifting cannonballs, put on armor and swing replicas of swords and other weapons. The bastion is open daily from 10am to 2pm and from 6pm to 9pm." https://www.gpsmycity.com/attractions/baluard-de-sant-bernat-41364.html https://www.nach-ibiza.de/aktivitaeten/festung-stadtmauern.html

Ibiza's castles and watchtowers, particularly Ibiza Old Town (Dalt Vila), tell a rich story spanning from Phoenician times to the Renaissance. They were crucial for defending the island against various invaders, including Ottoman forces and Barbary pirates. Dalt Vila's impressive Renaissance walls, built between 1554 and 1585, are a prime example of this defensive architecture.
For breathtaking vistas, head to Ibiza Old Town (Dalt Vila). Its bastions, such as Bastion of Saint James and Baluard de Sant Bernat, provide commanding views of the city, harbor, and Mediterranean Sea. The Torre des Savinar, also known as the 'Pirate Tower,' offers spectacular views overlooking the enigmatic islets of Es Vedrà and Es Vedranell, especially at sunset.
Yes, Ibiza Old Town (Dalt Vila) is very family-friendly. Its bastions, like the Bastion of Saint James and Baluard de Sant Bernat, feature interactive exhibits where visitors can learn about military technology, handle replica weapons, and even try on armor, making history engaging for all ages.
The best time to visit Ibiza's historical sites like Dalt Vila is during the shoulder seasons (spring and autumn) when the weather is pleasant and the crowds are smaller. During summer, it's advisable to visit in the early morning or late afternoon to avoid the midday heat, as exploring Dalt Vila involves walking up steep, cobbled streets.
The interior of the main Ibiza Castle (Castell d'Eivissa) isn't fully accessible to the public. However, exploring its exterior, the surrounding grounds, and the various bastions within Dalt Vila offers a rich historical experience. Some watchtowers, like Torre de sa Sal Rossa, occasionally offer guided visits to their interiors during summer months.
Ibiza's fortifications offer deep insights into military history. The Bastion of Saint James and Baluard de Sant Bernat within Dalt Vila showcase military technology from the 16th to 18th centuries, including cannons, armor, and uniforms. The Torre de sa Sal Rossa also features a chimney used for signaling enemy ships, highlighting its role in coastal defense.

For example, the Torre des Savinar is a popular spot accessible via a hiking route that offers stunning views. You can find various routes, including easy hikes like the "Ibiza Marina – Ibiza Old Town (Dalt Vila) loop from Ibiza," in our guide to Easy hikes around Ibiza.
Dalt Vila is characterized by narrow, winding, cobbled streets and steep inclines. While it offers an authentic historical experience, it can be challenging for those with mobility issues or wheelchairs. Comfortable walking shoes are highly recommended. Public transport can get you to the lower parts of Ibiza Town, but exploring Dalt Vila itself is best done on foot.
Beyond the prominent Dalt Vila, Ibiza's coastline is dotted with numerous 18th-century watchtowers that served as a defensive network against pirate attacks. Notable examples include Torre des Savinar (Pirate Tower), Torre de sa Sal Rossa, Torre de ses Portes, and Torre d'en Rovira. These offer unique historical insights and often spectacular natural settings.
Within Dalt Vila and the surrounding Ibiza Town, you'll find a wide array of amenities. There are numerous restaurants, cafes, boutique hotels, and small shops nestled within its ancient streets. The area also features museums and the historic Cathedral of Santa María at its highest point.
