Also this year (2025) well maintained, although no summit is ever climbed: really impressive route, it never gets boring but: not entirely without effort, always up, then down...let your gaze wander...past waterfalls, climb over streams...it's worth it!

Nothing to see except garbage and dog poop. Not worth it.

A wonderful, well-maintained path - although not easy - leads about 10 km from the town of Tolox to 3 waterfalls with great views - sometimes even to Torrecilla - "the highest" of the Sierra de las Nieves.

The waterfall does not always have water. The descent to the point from where you can see the waterfall is quite a hairy climb, but I wasn't prepared for that because of the wet, slippery rock.

Another of the beautiful jumps on the path of the waterfalls from Tolox. An ideal place to cool off in the summer months.

The region boasts several impressive waterfalls. The Rejía Waterfall in Tolox is considered the highest in Malaga province, with a 51-meter drop, and is particularly spectacular after heavy rainfall. Another significant cascade is the Cascada de Turón near El Burgo, recognized as a "Rincón Singular de Málaga" for its unique local importance.
For swimming and natural pools, consider Charco del Canalón Waterfall in Istán, which features crystal-clear mountain water and both deep and shallower pools. The Charco de la Virgen Waterfall in Tolox is also a popular spot for swimming and picnicking, especially for locals. Additionally, Barranco Blanco near Coín offers several waterfalls cascading into natural pools along the Alaminos River, which flows year-round.
Yes, several waterfalls are suitable for families. The Charco de la Virgen Waterfall is a popular, easily accessible spot for picnics and gentle wading. The Waterfall and Fountain in Parque Nacional de la Sierra de las Nieves is another small, family-friendly option. For those seeking a bit more adventure, the Charco del Canalón has a smaller, shallower pool downstream that is suitable for children.
Most waterfalls in the region are seasonal and are at their most impressive between autumn and spring, especially after significant rainfall. During these months, the water flow is strongest, offering the most spectacular views. Some spots, like Charco de la Virgen, can dry up in summer if there hasn't been sufficient rain. However, Barranco Blanco's Alaminos River flows year-round, making it a good option even in drier periods.
Many waterfalls in the region are accessible via hiking trails. For example, the Rejía Waterfall and Charco de la Virgen Waterfall are both part of the "Sendero de las Cascadas" (PR-A-282) route. The hike to Charco del Canalón is also a rewarding experience, though it can involve river crossings. You can find more hiking options, including the moderate "Parque Nacional de la Sierra de las Nieves – loop by the Cascadas Trail," on the Hiking around Centro-Sur O Guadalorce guide.
The Tajo de la Encantada Waterfall near El Chorro holds historical significance due to its connection with the El Chorro hydroelectric power station. This station, built between 1903 and 1905, utilized the Guadalhorce River's power. Visitors can enjoy views of both the natural waterfall and this historic engineering marvel from the Urban Viewpoint of the Tajo de la Encantada.
The region is rich in natural beauty. You'll encounter deep gorges, such as the one housing Charco del Canalón, and lush riparian vegetation including oleanders, poplars, and willows. Many areas feature crystal-clear rivers like the Alaminos at Barranco Blanco, and the Sierra de las Nieves National Park provides stunning mountainous backdrops and diverse Mediterranean flora.
Beyond visiting the waterfalls, the surrounding areas offer various outdoor activities. You can explore numerous hiking trails, from easy riverside walks along the River Grande near Alozaina and Yunquera to more challenging routes like the Caminito del Rey. Cycling routes are also available, such as those detailed in the Cycling around Centro-Sur O Guadalorce guide.
You can visit the Fuente de los Cien Caños (Fountain of a Hundred Spouts) in Villanueva del Trabuco. This impressive natural monument is considered the source of the Guadalhorce River, the longest and most voluminous river in Malaga province. After heavy rainfall, it becomes an impressive water show with water flowing from over a hundred spouts.
While popular spots are well-known, the region also offers unique experiences. The Salto del Cao in the Guadalteba area, along with the Nacimiento spring, provides a pleasant riverside walk and a beautiful waterfall that is particularly striking after heavy rain. The River Grande Waterfalls near Alozaina and Yunquera also offer stunning scenery on less-trafficked trails.
Visitors frequently highlight the refreshing natural pools for swimming, the picturesque scenery, and the opportunity for enjoyable hikes. The seasonal nature of many waterfalls means that seeing them at their peak flow after rains is a particularly rewarding experience. The combination of natural beauty and accessible outdoor activities makes these spots highly appreciated.
