The city wall encloses Visby's old town for approximately 3.4–3.6 km and was considered one of the most important fortifications in Northern Europe during the Middle Ages. The complex has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1995. It represents one of the best-preserved examples of a Hanseatic city wall.

Visby looks back on a history that goes back thousands of years and is one of the most interesting cities in Sweden. Today, around 24,000 people live in the capital, almost half of the total population of Gotland. However, the area was used by the Vikings many years ago and developed into an important trading center between the 12th and 14th centuries. The extensive city wall was built during this time and is still well preserved today. The good connection to the Baltic Sea played an important role in the development of Visby and Gotland and the port is still of enormous economic importance for the region today.
