Spectacular geological formation. The erosion caused by the passage of water has left large grooves in the limestone rock.

Río Higuerón Gorge

Highlight • Gorge

Not only a nice detour, but also a possible entry (coming from the north) to the official trail to Frigiliana.

In March 2019 (like Pilgrim Peter the year before) we first tried to take the upper descent down the mountain near Porta Verde to the Rio Higueron. Since the trail was not clear, quite steep and it was quite windy, we turned around. The second entry attempt at the cistern promised to become better, although at first we did not want it to be true that the "way" should be the (aquifer) riverbed.

At the waterfall there was a rope down, but since we did not know what awaits us behind it, we are then back a bit and have about 150m before the change made around the top. This way was actually ok, but cost me (since I am not afraid of heights) great overcoming.

For us an exciting experience and the absolute highlight of our hike.

Achim
July 26, 2025, Cascada de los Árboles Petrificados

The sinter crusts of the lime-rich water make the tree trunks trapped in the waterfall appear petrified. Hence the common name "Cascada de los Arboles Petrificados" (Petrified Trees Cascade). However, these are not petrified trees, but mineral deposits in flowing water that cover both rocks and plants (sinter). Source: Wikiloc

Currently, a section of 800 meters is still heavily overgrown, with huge rosemary and sage bushes, as well as thorns. It's best to bring a stick or something similar to push them away. However, the view is unique, and the spring is a dream.

In March 2025 there was a lot of water flowing, a trip is then only possible with suitable water shoes. We did not have that and returned.

The riverbed of the Rio Higueron, which dries up in summer, is a wonderful place to walk in summer. It is shaded in long sections by huge oleander bushes, which are particularly beautiful when they are in bloom. In the Frigiliana area, there is a large difference in height of around 10 m. There is a staircase there, but it is not immediately visible, so keep your eyes open.

Sadly no water in the river bed, but still nice to look at.
