Santa Maria del Castello Church Ruins

Highlight • Religious Site

On an enchanting hill, in the middle of the ruins of a medieval castle complex in an elevated position, the church of Santa Maria del Castello, as its name indicates, probably belonged to a castle that was destroyed by the Uranians in 1518. Today access is via the northwest side of the hill. The old access presumably led via a complicated system of kennels and gates from the east side.

It is a charming building with two parallel naves that was built at two different times. The primitive, perhaps aristocratic chapel with a round apse and a single two-story nave (the lower one probably a crypt) survived the demolition of the castle. The floor plan of today's church does not correspond to the primitive one, but is the result of an addition to the north of another nave, which was supplemented with a square choir from the early fifteenth century.
The two choirs are separated by wrought iron bars from the 17th century.
