Kourtaliotiko Gorge Waterfall

Highlight • Waterfall

There is an old and a new staircase. If you want to go into the waterfall you should take the old stairs. If you just want to look, I would take the new one. I did both what I can recommend. Even if swimming in the waterfall through the cold water is really not without it, you will be richly rewarded

Here, unfortunately, the water has made a dash through the bill. Due to the water level in October, we did not get any further here.

Idaean Cave (Cave of Zeus)

Highlight • Cave

Historically very interesting, at some point an attempt was made to improve it for tourism, and as is so often the case in Crete, the money ran out and a bit of it remained, a shame. Nevertheless, it's worth a visit, although the cave now probably belongs more to pigeons than to people.

Trail Among Ruined Buildings

The gorge itself is a fascinating relic from the time when 16 active watermills stood here in the 19th century! 🏞️✨ They supplied the region with flour and still shape the name of the gorge today ("Mili" means mill). Today, you can still discover many ruined mill ruins along the riverbed – with information boards that tell you the story.

The necropolis dates primarily from Roman times and, apart from its geographical proximity and the repurposing of its infrastructure, has no connection to the Church of the Five Virgins. These virgins are said to have been martyred here during the Ottoman period; the five water outlets of the spring beneath the large plane tree commemorate them.

A highly recommended hike. There's plenty of parking (extra touristy 🫣😅). Restrooms are also available, and they were quite clean. The signage is a bit outdated, but if you have a cell phone or something else with you, you'll find your way easily. The route is quite challenging; the first 1.5km involve a good 200 meters of elevation gain. The view, however, is simply stunning. Anyone who wants to see wildlife will definitely get their money's worth here. We saw several mountain goats, vultures including their nests, and various other small animals. The highlight is the chapel, which unfortunately was somewhat damaged when we visited. We definitely recommend this route and consider it a must-do for anyone in the area or on Crete.

As of September 25, unfortunately, many items in the church were destroyed, and it smelled of awful urine. Plastic bottles were everywhere, the contents of which also suggested urine. It's a great little memorial high up with a great view. It's a shame what's been done to it.
