The artificial lake of Bramiana was built in 1986 in Bramiana to meet the needs of the 30,000 greenhouses of Ierapetra. It is located 5 km northwest of the city, where the road connects Ierapetra and the village of Kalamafka. The lake covers an area of 1050 hectares and has a capacity of 15 million m3, making it the second largest wetland in Southern Greece, after the Potami Dam in the Amari Valley. The water is supplied mainly from the springs of Kefalovrysi of Kalamafka, from the Krygios River, from the Selakano Forest and Males area, from the springs of Malavra and from the springs of the Korakas Gorge of Meseleri. This artificial lake, in the middle of a dry area, has become a significant wetland and a stopping point for migratory birds. Today it attracts the largest population of water birds in Crete. According to the Natural History Museum of Crete, over 218 different bird species have been recorded in the region (2010), a very large number for such a young lake. All these reasons have contributed to the characterization of Bramiana as a National Park.

We're referring to the lower entrance. We'd recommend this one too, as not only is the walk there exciting but also worth it, but the sea is also within walking distance. Be sure to pack your swimming trunks. Highly recommended.

The old salt pans are barely recognizable. It's been a long time since salt was mined here.
