La Fessa is a canyon of landslide origin that opened up on the western flank of Monte Falcone. The local rock is sandstone and it is located near the village of Smerillo. The "fissure" can be traversed on foot by crossing it in the narrow passage where only one person can pass at a time, and it is reached by a path that starts from the Belvedere of the village.

Beautiful place, you can walk in the gorge and the next day go up from the Sibilla refuge to see the gorge from above. Unfortunately when we went there was too much water and we couldn't get over the river (it would have taken more determination than ours) so we did a very short tour that is not a loop.

The most prominent natural gorge in the Fermo area is the Infernaccio Gorge. It's known for its wild beauty, with water carving through narrow passages, and is a key part of the Sibillini Mountains. Other notable features include the Stretta delle Pisciarelle, characterized by numerous micro-waterfalls, and the View of the Tenna River Valley and Buco del Frassino, offering views of the river and a cave entrance.
Beyond the gorges themselves, you can explore a variety of natural features. These include caves like Lovers' Cave, which has two entrances and a romantic history, and the Hidden Waterfall within the Monti Sibillini National Park. The region also features river views and forested trails.
Yes, the Lovers' Cave is a natural monument with historical significance. It's associated with a local love story from the First World War, where a soldier and his beloved sought refuge there. The area around Infernaccio Gorge is also close to the Hermitage of San Leonardo, adding a spiritual and historical dimension to your visit.
The best times to visit the gorges in Fermo, particularly the Infernaccio Gorge, are generally spring and summer. During these seasons, the weather is more favorable for hiking and enjoying the powerful force of water carving through the rock, making for an impressive and picturesque landscape.
The Fermo region offers diverse outdoor activities. You can enjoy hiking on various trails, including easy routes like the Wild Orchids in Rubbiano – Infernaccio Gorge loop or more challenging treks such as the From Rubiano to the Eremo di San Leonardo al Volubrio. Mountain biking is also popular, with routes like the Da Porto Sant'Elpidio a Fermo lungo il Tenna.
Many areas within the gorges offer trails suitable for various fitness levels. For example, the excursion to the Infernaccio Gorge is a popular choice, and while some paths can be challenging, there are generally accessible sections. However, specific areas like the final 300 meters to the Hidden Waterfall are particularly difficult and not recommended for children due to steep, narrow, and bramble-filled terrain.
While specific regulations for each gorge may vary, generally, natural areas in Italy are often dog-friendly, especially on marked trails. It's advisable to keep dogs on a leash and ensure they are comfortable with rugged terrain, as some paths can be challenging. Always check local signage for any restrictions.
The natural environment of the Sibillini Mountains, which encompasses the Fermo gorges, provides opportunities to encounter local fauna. Visitors might spot various bird species, and there's a chance to see larger animals like the Apennine wolf and the golden eagle, especially in more remote areas like the Infernaccio Gorge.
Visitors frequently describe the Infernaccio Gorge as a 'paradise' and a 'must-see' destination. They appreciate the stunning scenery, the powerful force of water, and the immersive experience in nature. Many enjoy the hiking opportunities, especially the route that can be extended to the Hidden Rio waterfall.
While the Infernaccio Gorge is well-known, other spots like the Stretta delle Pisciarelle offer a unique experience with its numerous micro-waterfalls and the beginning of a cycle-pedestrian path along the Tenna river. The Capotenna area also provides beautiful river views and a sense of tranquility.
The difficulty level varies. Many trails through the gorges are rated as intermediate, such as those around Infernaccio Gorge and Stretta delle Pisciarelle. However, some sections, like the final approach to the Hidden Waterfall, are considered challenging due to steep, narrow, and overgrown paths, requiring appropriate footwear and caution.
