Starting point A is not safely located. It leads through impassable terrain or over non-existent paths. We aborted our descent from the bridge (Highlight 1) to starting point A and, thanks to the friendly guides at the bridge, were able to use it for the safe return to our car. Anyone who wants to do the whole loop should book a ticket for crossing the bridge in advance. Attention: limited ticket contingent per day.

This small suspended walkway appears discreetly along the wooden path that leads to the imposing 516 Arouca bridge. Here, you cross the Paiva River in a more intimate and serene way, feeling the water flowing below while the sounds of nature surround you. A kind of charming appetizer before the great spectacle of the main crossing.

Gola do Salto is one of the most impressive waterfalls on the Paiva River — a narrow gorge where the river roars with force. It is located next to the Espiunca bridge, where a suspended viewpoint offers you a privileged view and a natural concert with the sound of the waters echoing beneath your feet. The walkway that follows this landscape makes the route comfortable and accessible, even on naturally rocky and uneven terrain.

If you cross the bridge at Alvarenga and then take the wooden walkway along the Rio Paiva to Espiunca, you should remember that you will need a taxi from there back to the starting point. A later return via the Arouca bridge is not possible. However, if you just want to walk across the bridge and back, this is no problem with your ticket booking (online). The Alvarenga side is recommended for people who want to avoid the many wooden steps and just want the pure bridge experience.

After the forest fires on September 24, only the bridge is still open. Hopefully the repairs will go quickly.

Beautiful "wooden path" with impressive views. There are lots of stairs to climb up and down, especially the way back has to be taken into account, or halfway there at 2.5km (from the entrance) you can order a taxi from the nice guy. The suspension bridge is impressive... all in all a great experience with swimming opportunities to cool off... we were there at 39*. Part of the path is shaded.

While Aveiro itself is known for its coastal features, the broader region offers impressive canyon-like environments. The most notable area is the Arouca Geopark, home to the Paiva Walkways and the 516 Arouca Suspension Bridge. This area features dramatic river gorges, extensive boardwalks, and opportunities for adventure.
The Arouca Geopark is famous for the Paiva Walkways and 516 Arouca Suspension Bridge. The Paiva Walkways offer an 8 km route through a stunning gorge, while the 516 Arouca Suspension Bridge spans the Paiva River at a height of 175 m, providing breathtaking views. Another highlight is Gola do Salto (Rio Paiva), a powerful section of the river with rapids and a waterfall.
Yes, canyoning is an option in the wider Aveiro region. Canyon Aguieiras is mentioned as a site for canyoning. Additionally, within the Arouca Geopark, rivers like the Rio Teixeira and Frades River in the Serra da Freita mountains offer canyoning excursions for those seeking adventure.
The best time to visit for hiking and canyoning is generally during the spring (April to June) and early autumn (September to October) when the weather is milder and more pleasant. Summers can be hot, but offer opportunities for swimming in the rivers. Always check the weather forecast before your visit.
The Paiva Walkways offer a wonderful experience, but be aware that there are many stairs, especially on the return journey. The 516 Arouca Suspension Bridge is an impressive experience. While suitable for families, younger children or those with mobility issues might find the extensive walking and stairs challenging. It's advisable to book your time slot online in advance for both attractions.
The 516 Arouca Suspension Bridge requires an admission ticket, which should be booked online in advance with a specific time slot. You can access it from either the Alvarenga or Espiunca side. The Alvarenga entrance is often recommended for those who want to experience just the bridge without as many wooden steps. If you cross the bridge and walk the Paiva Walkways one way, you will need to arrange a taxi back to your starting point.
You can expect to see dramatic river gorges carved by powerful rivers like the Paiva, impressive waterfalls such as Gola do Salto, and lush riverside vegetation. The Arouca Geopark is also recognized by UNESCO for its unique geological features, including 'pedras parideiras' and giant trilobites.
Yes, the region offers excellent hiking opportunities. The Hiking in Aveiro guide features several routes, including those along the Paiva Walkways. You can find routes like the 'Paiva Walkways – Arouca 516 Suspension Bridge loop' or longer options like the 'Paiva Walkways – Paiva Walkways loop from Espiunca'.
Beyond hiking and canyoning, the area provides opportunities for mountain biking and traffic-free cycling. You can explore various routes listed in the MTB Trails in Aveiro guide and the Traffic-free bike rides in Aveiro guide. Kayaking tours are also organized on the Rio Paiva, especially around areas like Gola do Salto.
Visitors frequently praise the impressive views, the well-maintained wooden boardwalks, and the thrilling experience of crossing the 516 Arouca Suspension Bridge. Many enjoy the opportunity for swimming in the river to cool off during warmer months and appreciate the feeling of being in a wild, natural landscape reminiscent of the Alps.
Yes, the Arouca Geopark area, including towns like Arouca and Alvarenga, offers various cafes, restaurants, and accommodation options. These establishments cater to visitors exploring the Paiva Walkways and other attractions within the geopark.
