Picturesque old town around the market

The city with about 3,600 inhabitants is picturesquely located on the breakthrough of the Vistula from the Lublin and the Lesser Polish highlands. Because of the trade routes that were bundled there, the settlement soon became an important merchant town in the 12th century, in which many Jewish families also settled. Magnificent palaces were built in the late Middle Ages and Renaissance. The rule of the Swedes and the turmoil of the Thirty Years' War made the city impoverished, so much of the old substance was preserved. Today the old town on a terrace over the Vistula is a little gem.
A little tip: In the middle of the market place under a wooden shoring, you can fill up fresh drinking water free of charge 🤗

Janowiec Castle

Highlight • Castle

The castle was first mentioned in 1537. It was probably built by Mikołaj Firlej at the beginning of the sixteenth century and enlarged by his son Piotr (voivode of the Ruthenian Voivodeship) and grandson Andrzej. Under Andrzej, the important architect Santi Gucci built the complex from 1565-1585 in the Renaissance style. The castle was destroyed by the Swedes under King Charles X Gustav during the Swedish Deluge in 1655.

All attempts to rebuild the extensive castle came to nothing. In 1928 the Warsaw archaeologist Leon Kozłowski bought the castle. His reconstruction plans were halted by World War II. Even in the socialist era, Kozłowski remained the owner because the state had no interest in the property. In 1975 the chateau was bought by the Muzeum Nadwiślańskie in Kazimierz Dolny. The building has been renovated since 1988. The concept is to leave a substantial part of the building in ruins, while the other part is to be meticulously restored (Wikipedia).

The castle is open for tours and special events.

Czartoryski Palace in Puławy

Highlight • Castle

Czartoryski Palace in Puławy - a palace in Puławy, whose beginnings date back to the second half of the 17th century and are associated with the history of the magnate families: Lubomirski, Sieniawski and, above all, Czartoryski. The first Baroque palace of a semi-defensive nature was built in Puławy in the years 1671-1679 by the Grand Marshal of the Crown Stanisław Herakliusz Lubomirski. The palace was designed by the Dutch architect Tylman van Gameren. The building had a rectangular shape with four alcoves in the corners, and was prepared to perform defensive functions. From this phase of the building, the seventeenth-century Baroque entrance hall with preserved original colonnade and the form and decoration of the vault has been preserved, in a state close to its original. The first garden was also created at that time, of which it is known that there were alleys and regular carpet parterres below the escarpment. In 1706, when Puławy became the property of the Sieniawski family, Swedish troops destroyed the palace and its surroundings during the Great Northern War. Janów Podlaski Castle

Highlight • Castle

Janów Podlaski CastleIn 1450, after the invasion and destruction of Łuck by the Tatars, Bishop Jan Łosowicz moved permanently to the village of Porchowo.

In 1465, a location privilege was issued in Chociaczów under Chełmno law and the town adopted the name Janów. The residents were then exempted from paying fees for a period of 20 years, received the right to sell and exchange shops, houses, gardens and permission to build all kinds of wooden buildings within the city limits, as well as fishing from the Bug River and brewing beer. The duties included repairing damaged embankments. The location privilege is known only from a copy from 1821.

Historical sources contain information about the restoration of Janów Castle by Bishop Bernard Maciejowski (1588-1600).

During the Swedish invasion, the castle was repeatedly invaded and captured. On March 9, 1656, it was captured by the troops of the traitor Bogusław Radziwiłł, and in January 1660, it was captured and most likely burned by the Russian troops of Khovanski. The history of the buildings of the bishop's castle in Janów Podlaski that still exist today begins in the 18th century, when in the years 1770-1780, Bishop Paweł Turski built a baroque palace on the site of the former residence. At that time, the complex consisted of a residential part (castle), earthen fortifications with a moat, an Italian garden, a vegetable garden, a farm, ponds and a forest. The main body, burned by the Swedes, was not rebuilt and from then on the castle consisted of two parallel outbuildings with a courtyard in the middle.
