We did the hike after days of heavy rain. Emergency services came to rescue us after we lost our way because it was too slippery and dangerous!

The biggest travertine waterfall in Slovenia, apparently. To get to the waterfall, you take a really nice family sort of hike along the stream and across some wooden bridges. Some parts look like you're walking through a jungle. If possible, try to aim for a time with a little more water, then the waterfall should look more impressive (but the path might be harder to walk if the stream is higher).

The creek Bajdinc has its source under the hill of St. Ahac and extends into a narrow and deep ravine, where the creek flows over many jumps and also forms four waterfalls. A visit to this place is ideal for an afternoon "charging" in the green surroundings, where the sound of the water soothes even the most restless spirit. The waterfalls are situated along the Bajdinc Creek from the bottom of the Želimeljščica valley up to the regional road Ljubljana - Kočevje. The first waterfall in the lowest part of the ravine falls in two stages and is about 8 metres high. The second waterfall falls in several strands and is 10 metres high. Continuing up the ravine the surroundings become flatter, and we can find an abandoned mill alongside the creek. Very close to it are the third and fourth waterfall, each measuring about 5 metres in height. The third waterfall drops its water over a steep wall in two strands into a pool; its walls are covered with thick tufa and overgrown with dark green moss. The cache is located near the third and fourth waterfalls. After finding the cache you can explore the very picturesque surrounding area or visit the nearby Turjak Castle.

The third waterfall, which for most visitors is the most beautiful of the waterfalls in this gorge, is located in the middle of the rock jump. The water falls into the lake where the bravest even bathe. I do not recommend swimming because of the swirling water created by the waterfall. Water falls from the lake into the 2nd waterfall.

Among the most popular waterfalls in Osrednjeslovenska are Košca Waterfall, known as Slovenia's biggest travertine waterfall, and the series of cascades within Pekel Gorge Waterfalls, which includes the impressive Third Waterfall of Soteska Pekel. Another favorite is Orličje Waterfall, appreciated for its easy access to the pools below.
Yes, several waterfalls in Osrednjeslovenska are suitable for families. The hike to Košca Waterfall is described as a really nice family-friendly walk along a stream and across wooden bridges. The lower part of Orličje Waterfall is also easily accessible by a gentle, undemanding path, making it a popular family excursion point.
The best time to visit depends on what you want to experience. Waterfalls like Košca Waterfall are interesting in all seasons: mighty in spring due to abundant water, surrounded by greenery in summer, and potentially icy in winter. Hell Gorge is ideal for summer cooling, but after heavy rains, the stream can become wild, making it a dynamic experience.
Hell Gorge, less than 30 kilometers from Ljubljana, features five waterfalls. The trail through the gorge offers a relaxing walk initially, but becomes steeper after the first two waterfalls, requiring secure steps and in some places, steel cables. The highest waterfall here drops 20 meters. It's a great spot for summer cooling and even ice climbing in winter. You can find the Third Waterfall of Soteska Pekel within this gorge.
No, many of Slovenia's most widely recognized waterfalls, such as Savica, Peričnik, Kozjak, Boka, Rinka, and Martuljek Waterfalls, are situated in other regions like the Julian Alps, Triglav National Park, and the Soča Valley. While they are popular day trips from Ljubljana, they are not directly within the Osrednjeslovenska region.
Hiking difficulty varies. For example, the path to the lower part of Orličje Waterfall is gentle and undemanding. However, trails within Pekel Gorge Waterfalls become steeper after the initial cascades, requiring caution and sometimes steel cables. It's always advisable to check conditions, especially after heavy rain, as paths can become slippery and dangerous.
Beyond visiting the waterfalls, the Osrednjeslovenska region offers various outdoor activities. You can explore numerous cycling routes, from easy to difficult, as detailed in the Cycling in Osrednjeslovenska guide. There are also many hiking opportunities, including easy trails and more challenging Mountain Hikes in Osrednjeslovenska.
Yes, for instance, near the Pekel Gorge Waterfalls, you can find the Zavrhov Mill Ruins. This historical site marks the location of a mill that operated until 1942, adding a touch of local history to your natural exploration.
Given that trails can be wet and slippery, especially near the cascades or after rain, it's recommended to wear sturdy, waterproof hiking shoes with good grip. Layers of clothing are also advisable to adapt to changing weather conditions, and a waterproof jacket can be useful.
While the guide focuses on popular spots, the region's diverse landscape means there are always smaller, less-known cascades to discover. For a unique experience, consider exploring the Bajdinc Waterfalls, which offer a more secluded gorge setting.
