From 1602, an impressive terraced garden was created south of Wilhelmsburg Castle under Landgrave Moritz of Hesse-Kassel. Stylistically, the complex is still strongly influenced by the Renaissance. Side retaining walls and the supporting walls of the garden terraces, as well as a water feature added in 1687, which is preserved in parts, merge it into an artistic unit with the castle building. The trapezoidal floor plan and the sloping terraces create a special perspective effect of the garden. After the pleasure garden character was largely abandoned in the 18th century, the Wilhelmsburg gardens were used as leased gardens. A lovely restaurant set on spacious grounds. The tower can be climbed, and from here you can also access the high street. 👍🏻

Maienluft Castle must have been built before 1150 and was owned by the Knights of Wasungen. Around 1500, the castle lost its military significance and became an agricultural domain. The name Maienluft first appeared at this time. Today, there is a hotel here. Attention: The castle grounds can only be entered during opening hours. Contrary to the warning on the access road that there is a barrier with no turning possibility, you can drive up and there is even a parking space for hikers!

The castle's rose garden is laid out in terraces and is very well maintained. You have a view of the pond, Schmalkalden and the surrounding area. When the sun shines, it is pleasantly warm here.

The Walldorf fortified church is an impressive ensemble of buildings that has now been beautifully restored after a fire disaster. A tour is very worthwhile.
