After a three-week cold spell, the river was frozen solid in the town center and downstream towards Simmertal, but the onset of thaws caused large amounts of ice to drift. These accumulated above a wooded area and piled up under the bridge over the stream, which was only a few years old at the time. According to eyewitnesses, only a few centimeters were missing before the ice masses reached the bridge abutment.
